In this page you will find extracts from the film by John Gilpin-Brown which show dissection, perfusion and recording by voltage clamp from the giant axons of squid. The film was shot in the Marine Biological Association Laboratory, Plymouth UK and features, Profs, JZ Young, Hans Meves, Peter Baker, Alan Hodgkin and Richard Keynes.
The first video shows J Z Young dissecting a squid at the MBA laboratory Plymouth. He shows that stimulating the axon generates a contraction of the muscular mantle. Interestingly the audio indicates that he re-discovered the squid giant axon when looking at the very transparent stellate ganglion of the small squid Alloteuthis subulata.
