BIOHAZARD - Tales from ... my apartment
A band that formed near the tail-end of my era was Biohazard.
Man, I wish they would have come out earlier so I could have played Punishment and given them some cool introductions and hype.
But timing wasn't on our side, but they were in my apartment ... a lot.
After L'Amour, I moved to Chinatown East in Manhattan and one of my roommates was Scott Koenig who was managing Law and Order and eventually Biohazard.
I was out of the industry by 91 and grabbing whatever job(s) I could, but Scott would always knock on my door at 1am to ask my opinion on bands and one was Biohazard.
When it came to music, I rarely analyzed, especially on first listen.
What I cared about was if it moved me at all.
I don't care in what direction, but just fn move me.
Biohazard certainly did.
The energy flew off the cassette, and I immediately said to Scott that I wish I could have played and introduced them during my time at L'Amour and he replied, "us too".
Us too?
"Yes, I am going to start managing them", he replied.
Now, I didn't know the band well, I knew Evan pretty well from the club but that was it.
Scott was surprised that I was surprised, and he wondered why and I was honest ... I couldn't see Evan and Scott working together.
Scott laughed and said they were tight and I just said "ok".
Over the 3 plus years I lived there, Biohazard were over a lot.
They would pile into Scott's room and blast whatever and once in a while Evan would knock on my door or see me in the kitchen to kill time.
As time went on, I would hear everything the same night Scott did, he would run to play it (for me) and fill me in on the industry trials and tribulations he was dealing with as far as they went and I remember him playing me the first Biohazard and Onyx creation and loving it.
Scott wasn't sure how mainstream would accept it, but my only care was that it moved me and it certainly did.
I thought the band was set to break even bigger than they did, but what did I know? I was out of the scene and just a fan.
I had a falling out around 94 with Scott and moved out.
In 2005, we reconnected and remained tight until his unfortunate passing in 2021
When we reconnected in 2005, I asked Scott about Biohazard and he said, "Evan and I weren't seeing eye to eye".
It's a tough business and I get it, but damn ... I wish I could have played them and got to push them at L'Amour.
They are back together and killing it and I reconnected with Evan and built a friendship with Danny Schuler (drummer) who informed me of some pre-Biohazard bands he was in that I booked, and we discussed L'Amour a bit.
Go check em out ... they still kick ass.

"Anybody who hung out at L’Amour knew when the deep scratchy voice of Chuck Kaye started talking, it was time to put down the drink, stop chatting with the pretty girl, and pay attention. Chuck truly was the voice of L'Amour."
