NIFA Invests Nearly $10M in Food Safety and Defense (AFRI A1332)
NIFA has invested nearly $10 million in 21 projects as part of NIFA’s Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) Food Safety and Defense program, which supports research to reduce the risk of contamination of foods. This includes of pre- and post-harvest processes and technologies that reduce microbial pathogens as well as non-microbial food safety risks. It also includes development of methods for measuring (counting) pathogens, especially methods that avoid the need for enrichment.

NSF I-Corps Hub: Northeast Regional Program Completion
March 29, 2022:
Two student teams out of BECEL, Skye Chang's Elemeat and Prince Atsu's Annular Repair, have completed regional NSF I-Corps programs. NSF I-Corps provides entrepreneurial students with training to discover the market potential for their innovations. Successful completion of the program opens up further opportunities and resources for commercialization.
Grant Award from New Jersey Health Foundation for BECEL

BECEL receives a grant award from NJHF for research in the uses of precisely tuned electrical treatments to inhibit the migration and metastasis of cells of a brain tumor type that’s particularly difficult to treat. PowerGum Accelerates with Seed Funding from StartupRU
PowerGum, founded by Chancellor Donahue (ChE Class of 2022), Mark Moser, and Matthew Addona, and its team including Mackenzie Vukicevich, Michael Lampasona, Frank Cianciotta, Jacob Willets, and Adam Griefer, won support and seed funding through the StartupRU Summer Accelerator Program to develop their product, a chewing gum containing a unique blend of healthy supplements for optimizing fitness. They will be continuing an Engineering Clinic with Dr. Thompson in 2021-2022. See also this RCIE Newsletter.
Skye Wins in 2021 Rowan New Venture Competition with Elemeat
Skye Chang (ChE Class of 2023) won 2nd place in the 2021 Rowan New Venture Competition as founder of Elemeat – aiming to meet the technology needs of the alternative protein industry. She is starting an Engineering Clinic with Dr. Thompson in Fall 2021 that will focus seed funding on bioreactor design for precision fermentation. See also this RCIE Newsletter.
