• The area is quite shallow compared to other watersheds.

• No rivers actually empty into the bay! So, technically, it's a lagoon!

• The area is part of the Atlantic Flyway and is a major stopover for Bald Eagles!

• There are abundant oysters in Chincoteague Bay! Some consider them the best!

• There used to be a village on the neighboring national park island of Assateague!

• There are increasing amounts of bay scallops in the area, which feed the locals!

• Sharks and dolphins have been spotted here by locals and tourists.

• There is an annual pony swim that occurs every July. The feral horses swim from one side of the island to another and are corralled and sold.
