Glucagon:
The name glucagon sounds like the name of a giant, intimidating monster. To remember that glucagon stimulates the release of glucose into the bloodstream, imagine the Cookie Monster saying, "Me want glucose!" Since cookies are full of sugar, the image of the Cookie Monster searching for cookies works as a reminder that this pathway's goal is to make more glucose available.
Epinephrine:
Epinephrine is another name for adrenaline, the "fight-or-flight" hormone. During a dangerous situation the body needs a rapid supply of energy. Releasing glucose into the bloodstream provides the fuel needed to generate ATP quickly, making epinephrine easy to associate with glucose release.Â
Glucagon wards off low blood sugar by signaling for the body to release glucose into the bloodstream. It is released by the pancreas and it targets the liver to perform its signaling.Â
Epinephrine also releases glucose, but it is in order to generate ATP quickly during a fight or flight response.Â
G-Protein Coupled Receptors (GPCR)Â
7 transmembrane receptor (meaning it spans the membrane 7 times)
Has a G-protein with alpha, beta, and gamma subunits.Â
