Bio3 Design Laboratory

About Us

The Bio3 Design Laboratory (B3D Lab) is a research group within the School of Robotics at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), dedicated to developing innovative engineering solutions inspired by nature. Driven by a passion for harnessing the power of biomimicry, biomimetics, and bioinspiration, our team is dedicated to creating cutting-edge technologies that transform industries and improve lives. Our research pursuits span four key areas: soft robotics, additive manufacturing, artificial intelligence (AI), and microsystems.

Inspired by the flexibility and adaptability of living organisms, our research in soft robotics focuses on developing robots that can safely and effectively interact with humans and their environments, revolutionizing applications in healthcare, search and rescue, and manufacturing.

Additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, is a field where we can apply nature-inspired solutions. By studying the growth and adaptation of living organisms, we can develop manufacturing techniques that mimic these processes to create complex structures and systems without waste and with increased efficiency.

Motivated by the efficiency and effectiveness of natural systems, our research in artificial intelligence seeks to develop intelligent systems that can learn from nature and adapt to complex environments with more efficiency, effectiveness, and sustainability.

Driven by the precision and complexity of biological systems, our research in microsystems aims to develop miniature devices and systems that can mimic the functions of living cells and tissues in healthcare, energy, and manufacturing.

Ultimately, our goal is to create a new generation of technologies that are not only more capable and efficient, but also more gentle and compassionate. By developing technologies that are inspired by nature, we aim to create innovative solutions that transform industries, impact society positively, and improve the human experience.

The B3D Lab is recruiting graduate students at both MS and PhD levels.
