For BIO 131, it will take approximately an hour to read the lab manual and prepare your lab notebook for the upcoming lab. Your pre-labs are a substantial portion of your grade and also set the stage for how effectively you will complete each experiment.
You are encouraged to designate an appointment in your schedule when you will do your pre-lab preparation each week. Many students get together with another classmate or lab partner at the same time each week to do their pre-lab preparation together. This collaboration can be a good habit as long as you read the lab fully before doing any group studying and compose your summary in your OWN words.
Skim the lab exercise to get a sense for the experimental design and procedures.
Write the title and date for the lab on the top of new page on the right-hand side of your notebook.
Make an entry into your Table of Contents indicating where the title page for that week's Lab can be found in your notebook.
Write only on the right side pages when doing your pre-lab preparation.
For each Notebook prep, include the following headers & text:
Background:
Provide 1-2 sentences explaining the significance of the experiment to broader society or the planet.
Aim paragraph:
This should explain the model organism(s), provide the experimental questions you will answer and 1-2 sentences summarizing the experiments you will do. Use information from the 'Experimental Design' section as well as the subheadings under "Procedures." *
Hypothesis:
Use the information from the 'Experimental Design' section to generate your personal hypothesis for the lab.
Data collection tables:
Draft the tables outlined in the 'Procedures' section of your lab manual into your lab notebook. This what you will be ready to go for data collection!
For Lab each week:
Bring required materials for lab (notebook, laptop).
When you arrive in lab, your instructor will check to make sure that your pre-lab work is complete. **
