Field: Art History
The essay endeavours to refine the estimated date of a sancai figurine at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Citing existing literature and archaeological finds, the essay gives a thorough review on the stylistic and technological development of female sancai figurines. Using the mathematical idea of proof by contradiction combined with art-historical formal analysis, the essay suggests that lacunas exist in current archaeological colloquium of the Tang sancai ware. Subsequently, new possibilities are suggested for the origin of the figurine. This essay, albeit not directly in the author’s major realm, is a highlight of the author’s undergraduate education.
