Developer: Waterproof Games
Created using Unreal Engine 4
Released June 2017
A project I worked on as a school project together with 18 other students during my second year studying Narrative Design/Game Writing at Högskolan i Skövde (HiS). We developed a vertical slice of Whispers of the Ocean, showcasing what the finished product could have looked and played like. Which was a atmospheric exploration game where you play as a mermaid searching for her lost little sister. The goal was build a similar experience found in as games like ABZU, but with a darker tone and a more easy to grasp story. My responsibilites during the project's development mainly centered around its lore, dialogue, work out a language for the mermaids as well as designing its cutscenes and teaser.
Narrative Design
I was in charge of developing to most of the game’s world, short stories, of its lore as well as developing its characters. An task that had me work closely with the project’s 2d artists as we teamed up to create a main character both visually striking and with an interesting background and personality.
Cutscenes and Teaser
Worked together with the project sound designer to create the game’s cutscenes and teaser. They where made using Unreal Engine 4’s Sequencer as well as Adobe Elements.
One of the great things about game development is that is that there is so much to learn. Sure, it can at times feel overwhelming but I really do like to dip my toes in as many parts of it as I can. Since most of my time working on Whispers of the Ocean, it gave me a lot of time to hop in to the different cogs of the game development machine. It first and foremost made me understand the importance of teamwork, being humble and that everyone has something to bring to the table.
Besides that, I was able to hone and expand my skills as a game writer and this project also introduced me to Unreal Engine 4 and its visual scripting language Blue Prints, which I’ve been using ever since.
