Privacy Policy for BillWise

BillWise (“we”, “our”, or “the app”) is a privacy-first Android app that helps UK households track bills and subscriptions, get reminders, and switch to better deals. This policy explains what data the app uses and how it is handled.

1. Information we collect

Bill and app data (stored on your device)

Information you enter — such as bill names, providers, amounts, renewal dates, contract end dates, categories, notes, and savings records — is stored only on your device using local storage. We do not upload your bill data to our servers.

Settings (stored on your device)

Preferences such as dark mode, reminder settings, and premium status are saved locally on your device.

Promo and complimentary access (limited cloud data)

If you use promo codes or complimentary premium access, the app uses Firebase Anonymous Authentication to create a random device identifier. This identifier may be stored in Google Firebase / Firestore for:

Registering your device for optional complimentary access

Redeeming promo codes you enter

Recording that a promo code was redeemed (code, device id, date)

We do not ask for your name, email address, or password. You do not create a user account.

Advertising (free version)

If you use the free, ad-supported version, Google AdMob may collect and use data to show ads, in line with Google’s Privacy Policy. Premium subscribers who remove ads are not shown AdMob ads in the app.

Push notifications

The app may use Firebase Cloud Messaging to deliver push notifications (for example, price cap alerts). A device messaging token may be generated by Firebase for this purpose. Local bill reminders are scheduled on your device and do not require sending your bill details to our servers.

Purchases

If you subscribe to premium (£4.99/year), payment is processed by Google Play. We do not receive or store your payment card details.

3. Internet access and third-party services

The app uses the internet for:

4. Permissions

The app may request:

Notifications — bill reminders and price cap alerts

Alarms & reminders (Android) — reliable scheduled reminder times

Internet — Firebase, ads, and opening web links

You can deny or revoke permissions in your device settings; some features may not work without them.

5. Data retention and deletion

Bill data — remains on your device until you delete it in the app or uninstall BillWise

Promo / entitlement records — stored in Firebase only as needed for promo and complimentary access; contact us if you want a device entitlement removed

Uninstalling the app removes all locally stored bill data from your device

6. Children’s privacy

BillWise is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

7. Security

We use industry-standard services (Google Firebase, Google Play) for the limited cloud features described above. Your bill data stays on your device and is your responsibility to protect (for example, device lock screen, backups).

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the app after changes means you accept the updated policy.
