SHS 367 Language Science

This undergraduate, online course is a required course for students majoring and minoring in Speech and Hearing Science and also fulfills a General Studies requirement. The course covers basic linguistic principles, psycholinguistic research, and theories of language production and comprehension.

SHS 588 Bilingual Language Acquisition

This graduate course is an elective for students in the M.S. in Communication Disorders program. It is required for students who are enrolled in the Multilingual/Multicultural Certificate Track. This course focuses on children’s bilingual language acquisition, with a focus on the different components of language development, mostly in the context of bilingualism in the United States. In addition to Spanish-English language development; this course will also focus on other languages to examine development in a similar context. We discuss the role of socialization practices, syntax, morphology, semantics, and cognitive processes from early childhood to adulthood and aging in bilinguals in language acquisition.

SHS 575 Aphasia and Related Neurogenic Language Disorders

This graduate course is required for all students in the M.S. in Communication Disorders program. It covers assessment and treatment of acquired neurolinguistic impairment, specifically the different aphasias. The purpose of this course is to provide students with a scientific and clinical understanding of the nature of both aphasia and related neurogenic disorders, including agnosia, right hemisphere disorders, TBI, dementia, and motor speech disorders.
