Diversity, equity and inclusion can be understood in terms of curriculum, pedagogy and climate.
Please see the sample lessons for the ways that I emphasize the intellectual contributions by scholars from underrepresented groups.
In terms of pedagogy, I am mindful of the different constituencies and traditions that students represent and bring into the room. This is not just race, but gender, physical ability, sexual orientation, religious and socio-economic background. I try to always be mindful of student voices, who speaks and who doesn't and actively seek to promote ever-fuller class participation.
Please see the sample lessons for ways that I scaffold and build in time and attention to accommodate the learning needs of all students.
In terms of climate, as a teacher in culturally diverse settings, it is important to create safe spaces where all manner of differences are respected. It is not easy to document a safe climate, though I see it in those moments when a quiet student ventures to speak or a formerly disengaged student shows in their demeanor and words that they are meaningfully sitting with the deeper insights of a particular reading, video or activity (rather than box-ticking or complying in name only with the literal requirements of the same)!
