Starting on June 19th, we will be biking across America in order to raise money for 350.org.
The trip could be thought of as four parts each about a week in length, each with a different challenge, we have six weeks for the trip, the final week we hope to be in Cuba, and that leaves a week for rest days, bad weather, and miscalculations.
Part one: getting started, the challenges getting started riding across Ohio, which is relatively flat, but getting used to 50+ miles a day. We will have vehicle support for this first 6 days, and with luck the vehicle will still be with us as we move into Kentucky. (We should be able to do 5 days to Kentucky)
Part two: the hills of Kentucky and Tennessee, not only will we hit our hilliest terrain in this region, we will also lose our support vehicle for a bit. Without the support vehicle we will start carrying our own supplies. But Beth will join us again with a support vehicle around the weekend of July 1st. Hopefully the first week will prepare us for part two. (At least 6 or more days to Georgia)
Part three: the stretch across Georgia, this will include biking into the suburbs of Atlanta to visit the grandparents, and then a long stretch through rural Georgia, we will be in the July, and the temperatures will likely be hotter. The challenge here is to adjust to the temperature, stay hydrated. (Give or take 7 days of biking to Florida plus at least a day north of Atlanta with the grandparents)
Part four: the Florida coast, all about the heat, getting up early to try to catch some less hot time, Hydration , hydration , hydration. We will bike to Miami and maybe to Key West. This will be the longest stretch of time. Although we will be camping a lot during the trip, when we get to Florida we will probably stay in more hotels. (if we make it to Key West another 10 days of biking if not it might be because the heat has slowed us down so it could still be 10 days or more)
Assuming regulations allow it, we're hoping to be flying to Cuba from Fort Lauderdale and then we will fly home from Cuba. If we get to Key West we will probably take a bus from Key west back to Fort Lauderdale for the flight. We are likely to fly to Cuba around the 23st of July and fly back home by the 30th (Still nailing down some details).
