Bike Shop Tours

Bike Shop Tours

Hey folks! I wanted to share something exciting with you all. During the early stages of the pandemic just before I started scheming up Bike Story Night, I started a little project called Bike Shop Tour. With so many people rediscovering their love for cycling, I wanted to assist them in finding local bike shops. It's a passion of mine, and I'm thrilled to revive it now! Each month or so I'd like to feature a different local shop. Giving you look inside and maybe even a mini back story on how the shop got started. Stay tuned for more Bike Shop Tour adventures coming your way.

Let's continue exploring and supporting our local bike shops together!

Located in the E. MLK neighborhood, Yellow Bike Project is often the top recommendation when friends and I meet someone looking for a bike. It’s a place many of us have grown to love and rely on. I've met so many people who have found true gems at this shop.

Yellow Bike Mission:

Yellow Bike is a non-profit community bike shop with grassroots origins.

We EMPOWER individuals through life changing transportation, by providing workspace and tools, and cultivating enthusiastic community participation to advance our vision.

We EDUCATE people wanting to learn about bicycles and bicycle maintenance.

We REVIVE bicycles to get them on the streets of Austin and make them available to all.

Yellow Bike Project has been a cornerstone of the community for the past 27 years, providing invaluable services to those who love to explore and adventure by bike as well as for those who rely on bicycles as their primary mode of transportation. The shop exudes a creative, DIY vibe with fun signage and vibrant, artistic touches throughout the building. It’s like a classroom filled with everything bike-related, yet with a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Employees and volunteers are always working on bikes or helping others learn to do so.

Near the entrance and front of the shop, you'll find at least 20 used bikes for sale, and there’s always a good variety and selection to look through and test out. Further into the shop, you’ll find bins filled with bike parts and neatly organized bike frames hanging from the ceiling. The shop's upstairs balcony showcases an impressive array of bike forks along the railing. There are several "work stands with tools for you to use and get to work on your own bike with the help of volunteers and or on your own.

Whether you're looking for a bike, want to donate your bike, take a workshop, become a volunteer, or support all the amazing work they’re doing, the Yellow Bike website has all the information you need. A key part of their mission is providing free access to the shop to the public, so be sure to check their calendar for available dates.

A Note on Recent Events:

Recently, Yellow Bike Project experienced a burglary, resulting in the loss of bikes and damage to the building. They have a GoFundMe campaign to help recover from this incident. they are so close to reaching their goal, If you can, please consider making a donation—every penny counts and means so much to the Yellow Bike community. They have been deeply touched by the outpouring of support and donations received so far.

It was a pleasure exploring the diverse selection of bike accessories at BIKEALOT. They offer a fantastic array of options to meet all your biking needs, including a current sale with helmets currently at 20% off.

Getting to know Jeni, Brad, and their friendly pup Pashley was so lovely. They shared insights into their family-owned shop in South Austin, where a warm and welcoming atmosphere awaits every visitor. The shop's ambiance resonates with their love for bikes and nature, evident from the repurposed wood floors sourced from a school gym, which adds a unique charm to the space. The wall adorned with posters showcasing bike art spanning over a century adds to the shop's character as well.

Located in the Crockett Shopping Center, in between Reverie Book Store and Lazydaze cafe, BIKEALOT is conveniently located for enthusiasts of both cycling, literature and sweet treats.

Their website is a treasure trove of information covering everything from the bikes they carry to the services they offer alongside valuable bike-related resources.

Established in 2012 on Pack Saddle Pass, BIKEALOT is driven by a mission to share and spread the joy of cycling within the community. They proudly showcase bikes from reputable brands like KONA, Fairdale, and their newest addition, Breezer.

As an added bonus, enjoy a 15% discount off your purchase by entering promo code "BIKEMONTH" when shopping online via their website throughout May!

Their wide range of offerings and services truly impressed me. As stated on their website, "We proudly serve all types of cyclists, including new and veteran riders, road and mountain aficionados, and recreation and transportation cyclists. When you bring your bicycle to us for maintenance or repair, our friendly, professionally trained technicians will assess your bike's needs and provide you with a free, no-obligation estimate. Whether your bike needs a minor adjustment or a major overhaul, we promise that your ride is in good hands."

Visiting this new bike shop was an absolute blast, and I'm already looking forward to my next visit. I saw several bike accessories that Ive been wanting to check into and so glad to see they had then available! If you're in the area, I highly recommend stopping by Atxbikes. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!

One aspect that caught my attention is their weekly rides catered to different experience levels. Starting right from the bike shop, these rides are a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow cyclists. To stay updated on their rides and events, make sure to follow their IG account @atxbikes_

You wouldn't want to miss out on the fun! ATX Bikes is a local gem that has been serving the community for many years. Under the current ownership for about 8 years, they have built a reputation for excellence. Their team of skilled mechanics is always ready to assist you in keeping your bike in top shape for countless adventures ahead.

I finally had a chance to visit this bike shop I had been hearing about on Burnet Road. @bicyclehouseatx recently opened just seven months ago, but you could never tell by how cool the shop is looking so far. There are some great details you'll notice right when you walk in the shop: nice tall ceiling, lots of cool bikes (Giant, Liv, Scott, etc) and a great selection of apparel. To really pull the room together they have a cool record player, because you gotta have a record player in a bike house! Further to the back is their service department. Like the rest of the shop it looks like a well thought out and organized space ready to focus on your bike repairs.James and Thomas were busy on a couple things in the shop, but made time to chat with me and answer some questions. Thanks again for letting me pop in and scope out your shop. I'll be back soon!
I definitely could have taken better pics, so be sure to check out the ones they have up on their socials or on google maps."At Bicycle House, we work to empower cyclists through best-in-class service, products, and expertise. We strive to surpass your expectations, while fostering a community of riders who will help us spread the simple, life-changing joy of cycling."Repairs, Sales, Bike Fits and more! Check out my Reel on Bicycle House here

Thanks for stopping by!
