We strive to make biking more accessible for low-income people in the Windham, CT area as an alternative transportation option.
An estimated 13% of adults in Willimantic don’t have access to private cars, and biking can be an alternative form of transportation. The Bikes for Windham is an effort to collect, assess, distribute adult and youth bikes for transportation and recreation.
Bikes for Windham works off donated ridable bikes that can be distributed quickly with a quick check or tune-up. How do you know if it’s rideable? Could you safely ride it around the block with some air in the tires?
Please don’t donate bikes you wouldn’t ride or should be recycled. We don’t have the space or repair capacity for big repairs.
Bikes for Windham takes the following bike-related donations:
Rideable bikes you could ride with some air or a small tune-up
Locks with keys or combinations
Bike lights or reflectors (functional)
New helmets
Air pumps (functional)
You can donate bikes or listed bike equipment on the WAIM (WAIM Loading Dock Riverside Drive Willimantic CT), generally Tuesdays – Saturdays 9 am – Noon (excluding holidays). See more on Material Donation.
Are you a corporate, religious, educational or other non-profit organization with bikes or bike equipment to donate? Contact Kristin Fortier (volunteeradmin@waimct.org | 860.456.7270 x 105) with questions and to organize the donation.
You can request a bike through WAIMs Case Management system like furniture or other big items. Bikes for Windham’s main bike distribution is in the summer months June-September. We know demand is high and we try to distribute bikes as they come in. More on shopping at WAIM.
We work hard to fix up and distribute bikes with important resources such as locks, helmets and lights. Donations help us with repair and equipment purchases to supplement donations.
