Just like how most people don't question what is in the kibble they give their dogs, most people also do not question the safety of the monthly preventatives NOR do they realize when their dog is experiencing side effects like seizures. They continue to give their dogs these "preventatives" that are causing issues and then add another medication for the side effect.
Most vets hand out these "preventatives" like candy. Never even mentioning side effects or making correlations when pets are experiencing them. This is malpractice. We cannot blindly trust what we are told when there are evidence and studies that show the dangers.
When we are giving information such as this, we are not advocating to do NOTHING then as a preventative. Diatomaceous Earth is a wonderful preventative as well as mineral. As is GARLIC (yes seriously).
FDA Numbers for Adverse Reactions & Deaths
I don't believe in ever taking anyones word, do the research yourself, pull up the numbers yourself, so you can see. Will you believe the adverse reactions as reported by the FDA? How about published studies? What about veterinarians that have put their career on the line to advocate for these creates that cannot advocate for themselves? Read more under the FILES section for yourself HERE.
I prefer to use diet for MOST things WHENEVER POSSIBLE. If my citrus tree has leaf miners or my berry bush has aphids, I do not JUST treat the bugs. I treat the plant. I feed it proper fertilizers that give it the vitamins it needs, trace minerals from the ocean (fish, kelp, etc), compost. A strong plant is not susceptible to bugs taking up residence and feeding off of it. The human body is the same. Dogs are the same.
Worms/Heartworms
Diatomaceous Earth
Dog can be dusted as well as their bedding for fleas. However, we LOVE Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth (FGDE) as a supplement as well. This is a natural dewormer and mineral. I have seen hair grow back ridiculously fast on rescues we have received due to the minerals in FGDE. Of course what we SEE is the last of the benefits, all the REALLY GOOD stuff is happening INSIDE the body that we can't see. Start with 1/8tsp and increase by 1/8 every 2 weeks until you reach the appropriate dose for your animal. A maintenance dose and a treatment dose are different. FGDE can be doubled or tripled safely. Click above for more info.
For more information, resources and answer to questions for FGDE please visit HERE. Search for questions, ask them, ask us! But more importantly, see for yourself.
FGDE is also appropriate for heartworms.
Fleas
Diatomaceous Earth - use topically. This is not my favorite method. It changes the feel of the fur, you have to be careful that you and your pet don't breathe it in as inhaling any powder is not good. But it does work.
Fresh garlic in food: 15 lb dog - 1/4tsp 6months and older
Do not give if dog is anemic
Contrary to popular belief, garlic is not toxic for dogs. Too much can be, but too much water is not good either. Don't let dosage issues stop you from giving your dog garlic. Read here for more info.
Turmeric in food: just sprinkle some on as a food topper, it doesn't take much to change the odor of the dog for parasites to not like it.
Mosquitos
Nutritional Yeast- 1tsp per 20 lbs
Dogs have less reaction to nutritional yeast vs brewer's yeast but both can cause reactions in pets. It is the B vitamins in the yeast that we are really after so can use B vitamins as well.
Ticks
MSM: 1T per 100lbs
MSM is a natural sulfur good for MANY things including joints as is turmeric since it is also a natural anti-inflammatory.
IMPORTANT: Ingesting garlic, turmeric, nutritional yeast and MSM changes the body odor of the dog slightly, not noticeable by people but enough that fleas and ticks don't like it. It's important to remember that preventative the vets give, do NOT actually prevent anything. The fleas and ticks will still get on your dog and bite your dog, it's just that now you have a poison in your dog that will kill the flea or tick when they bite. This small amount of poison given regularly to your dog is ALSO harming your dog.
Please visit our GARLIC page for links to published studies.
All of the above are wonderful, nutritional things to be adding to your dogs food anyway. Please check out our page on the canine diet if you haven't already. Dogs can have reactions or allergies just like people, even if it IS a good, healthy product. These are general guidelines and will require extra research, trials and commitment to your pets health and wellness to find the perfect blend. I have added Facebook group links to connect you with communities to help.
Like anything, researching and doing what you feel comfortable with after knowing all of the information is key. There is the traditional path, the all natural path AND a combination. For example, you can use a natural heart worm preventative like diatomaceous earth or THIS product, or you can choose to give a regular one bought at the vet every 4-5 months instead of every month, since it takes 6 months for a heart worm to grow into an adult. Many animal professionals consider the traditional preventatives to be worse than getting heart worms and treating them. I have known dogs that had heart worms and live to be 16 still without ANY treatments. This docuseries is a WEALTH of information that can help get you on your journey.

Diataomaceous Earth Group
Bravecto Nexgard Comfortis Simparica Trifexis & others Do They Kill Dogs? This group is life changing. You will find HARD TO WATCH videos where people have just given their dog a prevenative and now the dog is shaking and having neurological issues, among other things. This is real and it is happening. Your dog can take them several times and then BOOM, have a reaction, or it can happen the first time. It can be immediate or it can be weeks later. Read the package insert. Informed consent is not being given by vets. This is malpractice.
Some pets and areas may have a harder time with fleas and ticks than others so there are various options to try. Feeding a raw diet is key as well as adding things to their food to keep a robust immune system as parasites prey on the weak.
If your pet has been on preventatives encouraged by the vet and having reactions or if you just want to detox your pet to transition to natural methods, this chart will help with products and dosage. I typically use milk thistle from the health food store.
We are not health professionals. We recommend researching and finding a veterinarian that believes in these natural methods. But above all, we believe in using your own reasoning and common sense.
