What Are Major Differences Between C++ And Java?
C++ and Java are Object Oriented Programming Languages which means both are based on the concept of ‘object’. C++ is platform dependent while java is platform independent. Once we have written a Java code, we can run it on any device equipped with Java Virtual Machine but this cannot be done with a C++ program. If we have written a C++ program on windows then it will run on windows OS only. C++ program written once can be compiled anywhere (WOCA) but the Java program written once can run anywhere / everywhere (WORA / WORE). In C++ programming language, binary code is extracted and it is converted to the machine code by the operating system while the Java programs run on the virtual machine. The Java Virtual Machine converts the binary code to the machine code. There are three process in JVM after which we get the desired output. First is class loader which finds and load the binary data, verifies it and allocates memory for the class variable and then it invokes Java code that initialize the class variable to the proper starting values. After this the byte code verification is done and the code is executed by the just-in-time compiler. The JIT compiler translates the byte code into the native machine language. In C++ programs the memory management is done by using pointers which has a major drawback. Pointers store the address of variable or they are the memory location but the disadvantage of using pointers for memory management is that if we access the pointer without allocating memory or if invalid pointer is accessed then the program crashes. Java uses its JVM feature for the memory management which reduces the chance of program crash. Because of the java virtual machine feature, the java programs are more secure than the C++ programs. C++ is a hybrid language. It supports both procedural and object oriented programming while Java is a pure object oriented programming language. C++ supports structure, union, operator overloading and pointer arithmetic but Java does not. Java supports ‘references’ which to similar to pointers in C++. C++ supports destructor which is automatically invoked when the object is destroyed but Java does not support the concept of destructor, it supports automatic garbage collection. Java has built in support for threads but C++ depends on the non standard third party libraries for thread support. In Java we have a Thread class which can be inherited to create a new thread and to override the run() method. C++ supports default arguments and scope resolution operator but java does not support the default arguments and the scope resolution operator. In java, the functions are defined within the class only and so there is no need of the scope resolution operator.
