PACK 49 BIG BEAR
We currently have a family pack for youth enrolled in Kinder - 5th grade. Kinder and 1st graders are
required to have an adult partner with them at all meetings and events.
We welcome parent involvement at all levels and do ask for extra parent help and support to ensure
we’re doing our best to meet the needs of all ability levels. We hold our all-Pack meeting on the first
Tues meeting night of the month, we hold a spring family campout and other organized events and
service opportunities through the year. (*Troop is for older Scouts, under the age of 18 and in grades 6 th -
12 th ). The Pack is led by the Cub Master and Asst Cub Masters under guidance from the Committee and
Charter Organization Representative.
WHO ARE THE DEN & PACK LEADERS?
See the Committee section here.
DEN
The Pack is made up of Dens, based off of grade level in school. Dens have animal names (Kinder – Lion,
1 st – Tiger, 2 nd Wolf, 3 rd – Bear, 4 th Webelos year 1, 5 th Webelos year 2 or AOL) Ideally dens will have 6-8 youth, lead by a team of Den Leaders and or Asst Den Leaders. Den Chiefs (Scouts at the Troop level with den training) will also assist. Dens will meet the remaining Tuesdays each month and work on age-appropriate skills and lessons. We focus on learning through fun and rank progress is tracked in
Scoutbook. If your youth misses a den meeting, check the website for what was covered and work on it
at home. Send your den leader a picture or video or documentation on how your youth completed the
requirements. The Den Leader may ask your youth to share what they learned, their favorite part or any
challenges they encountered.
PARENTS/ADULT PARTNERS
We are a volunteer lead group. Scouting is fun for the whole family and we may ask you to help with an
activity, event or a specific meeting. If you have a special skill set – let us know! We have several
openings for leadership positions and without filling them, we will limit the programs we can offer to
your youth. Some Rank requirements will need to be worked at home with family, your Den Leaders will
provide instructions.
All parents/adult partners will need to compete Youth Protection Training – 3 online modules (about 80
mins) found at my.scouting.org ~ create an account and once complete send the certificate to

WHERE DO I FIND TROOP/PACK 49 ON SOCIAL MEDIA?
WHERE DO WE MEET?
The Ranch 2080 Erwin Ranch Rd, Big Bear, CA 92314
WHEN DO WE MEET?
Pack 49 meets Tuesdays following BVUSD calendar. Meetings begin August 8th from 6-7 pm at the Ranch.
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A DEN, A PACK, AND A TROOP?
A Den is your grade specific group (for example if you're a first grader you are in the Tiger Den). A Den typically ranges from 2-8 kids.
A Pack is all of the kids in kindergarten through 5th grade. Pack 49 averages about 35 Cub Scouts in the Pack.
A Troop is a group of older Scouts (mid 5th grade through high school). When our Cub Scouts crossover during their fifth grade year, they join a Troop.
WHAT COUNCIL ARE WE IN?
Council – 045- California Inland Empire Council (CIEC) www.iescouts.org
Each year our Council holds events and camping opportunities – some events we will attend as a Pack
and others you may opt to attend individually or as a family. Council also provides tons of resources and
opportunities to become a very effective and well-trained leader in Scouts.
WHAT DISTRICT ARE WE IN?
Scouts in a Council are further divided into Districts. Our Troop and Pack are in the High Desert District.
Our Council is made up of districts to facilitate the program. Our Pack is based out of Big Bear placing us
within the boundaries of the High Desert District (HD). The district also provides volunteer support,
trainings, district camps, events, fundraising opportunities, and administrative services at a more local
level. Monthly Roundtable meetings are open to all in our district, held the first Thursday of each month
at 7pm in Silver Valley Lake.
CHARTER ORGANIZATION - BIG BEAR LIONS CLUB
The Big Bear Lion’s Club is our Chartering Organization. This means they not only established our Pack &
Troop program but help maintain and oversee them year after year. The Club provides financial support,
guidance, and leadership to the Pack. If you meet a Lion, please thank them for their support. If you
have an opportunity to support a Lion event, please do and help us pay their support forward. Every
year, the Scouts help the Big Bear Lions Club with their City of Hope Fundraiser at Village Pizza. It’s a
great time for all!

ACTIVITIES
The mission of Scouting is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over
their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. We do this by
modeling the behavior, but mostly with the goal of “Fun with a Purpose!” Our leaders are
committed to Do Their Best to incorporate this goal into everything we do with the Scouts.
We will recognize achievements with awards every other month during the General Pack
Meeting (first Tues we meet of the month). We hold our Blue & Gold Awards Banquet and AOL
Rank Up Ceremony to celebrate the birthday of Scouting, and Bridge Arrow of Light recipients
over to the Troop.
Pinewood Derby – Scouts design and craft their cars and everyone has fun along the way. Who knows, we
may have an adult heat this year as well! This is also a recruitment event.
We do Fall and Spring family campouts and have several service project opportunities
throughout the year. Adventure Weekend Campout is Sept 27-29 2024 at Glen Helen
Regional Park. This is a council level event. Our Spring Family Campout is scheduled for March or April 2025.
More details to come as we get closer. Again – check the website!
If you do not currently have all the camping gear you think you may need, or any at all, don’t let
that be a reason not to attend a campout – reach out to the committee chair and we can help.
Let the Committee Chair know if you’d like to be on the planning committee for any of these
activities/events!
Lastly, our program changes from year to year. We evaluate and make adjustments as the pack
grows. These are some of the events and projects we have planned and have worked well for us
in the past. However, our program is dependent on our volunteers and adult involvement.
Helping our youth partake in new adventures, overcome challenges, stretch their comfort
zones, and experience growth opportunities while create lasting memories and friendships,
new found leadership skills and confidence and ultimately help shape their lives. We try to keep
the projects and activities fun, and they should always have a purpose. If you have ideas to
strengthen and improve our program, get involved and let us know. The more involvement, the
less burnout and the more fun we have. A diverse program is a healthy program and we look
forward to a fun, impactful year with each of you and your families.
