As one of the smaller boys in school, Josh Taylor's classmates would have laughed at you if you told them their peer was a future world boxing champion. Given the un-intimidating appearance of the youngster, this would have been deemed a wild premonition. However, this did not stop Josh’s fearless attitude, and the young lad was known for being keen to throw down with anyone who wanted it, resulting in the Scottish champ getting a reputation for being one of the best fighters of his generation.
The tartan tornado started learning his trade in Taekwondo and his efforts resulted in him becoming a junior champion. When he was 15, he turned to boxing and joined Lochend amateur boxing club and credits his success to this day to Lochend’s Terry McCormack who trained him as a youngster. Terry spotted potential in Josh and helped him hone his skills leading to him winning a silver medal in the 2010 commonwealth games and competing in the 2012 Olympics. In 2015 he made the decision to turn pro and signed a contract with Barry McGuigan's Cyclone Promotions.
Josh’s career continues to flourish and up until around December 2019 he was trained by Barry’s son, Shane McGuigan, however, their relationship turned sour and Josh made the not so difficult decision to leave and sign a deal with Bob Arum and Top Rank boxing, a clever career move for the up-and-coming boxer as he is now trained by Ben Davison, who has trained the likes of Tyson Fury and Billy Joe Saunders. Ben is best known for helping the gypsy king to shed 10 stone leading to the biggest comeback in boxing history.
2019 was an eventful year for Josh as he fell into the trap many boxers before him have fallen into and suffered bad publicity due to how he conducted himself outside of the ring, after a drunken night out he found himself in the dock accused of shouting profanities at bouncers outside a nightclub in Edinburgh, near his hometown of Prestonpans after being asked to leave for being too intoxicated. It was also alleged Josh had cocaine in his possession (a charge that was later dropped) Josh pled guilty to the former charge and was fined £350.
As expected after a night in the city’s St Leonard's police station Josh woke from his slumber absolutely mortified and took to Twitter to apologise, he also met with the bouncer in question to give his deepest apologies, a meeting that was conveniently caught on camera with the two men shaking hands and laughing it off (excellent PR work).
The future for the 30-year-old boxer is looking bright, with boxing fans most keen to see him face American unified lightweight world champion, Teofimo Lopez, don’t get too excited about this though, as there are a few men who will be in the ring with the tartan tornado before that day comes, Jose Ramirez is tipped to be the next opponent, followed up by Chorley's Jack Catterall. Hoping to have 4 or 5 more fights left in his career, the coming years look promising for the scot with him being determined to continue to write his way into the history books. A fearless warrior Scotland is proud to call one of their own, the support for the fighter continues to grow.
