BIG SAL VALVO AND WWF - And my (almost) involvement
Taken from a Facebook post
-
Spyridon P. (L'Amour regular) said I should have worked for WWF due to the way I announced bands ... here is a never before told story I thought of after reading that ...
One of my closest friends during the L'Amour days was Big Sal Valvo.
Before I had my own car, Sal would go out of his way to pick me up and drive me home.
When I first started I drove in with George and Mike Parente (owners).
Sal thought that was a bad look for me with the rest of the staff and said he will drive me.
Sal knew me prior to my era/error. We shared a love for "SKITTLES" and bonded over that.
During my time 84-88, Sal worked pretty regularly at the club outside of when he toured with Twisted Sister.
By 88 he was pretty much gone and held table at The Alibi Inn in SI ... heck I could tell a lot of stories about there as well.
In 1986, WWF star Randy Savage aka Macho Man and his wife Elizabeth moved to Staten Island.
One day by chance in 87, he ran into Big Sal (I think it was at DMV) and introduced himself.
They started talking and Randy was impressed by Sal's background and legacy (not my story to tell).
He told Sal, he should think about wrestling.
Sal mentioned he didn't feel comfortable losing and being saddled with a stupid gimmick and Randy said he understood but to see where it leads.
Sal only told a few people with me being one. He not just trusted me, but had an idea ...
Who better to "manage" him than ... ME?
I was good on the mic and arrogant enough to pull it off. Plus he would have his confidante and SKITTLES buddy with him.
I was just getting into WWF at this time and said "sure" and came up with the character of MEGA-MAN (ultimate biker looking guy) and ROCK STARR (his annoying, loud mouth manager with long curly hair).
WWE was cheesy as cheesy can be in 87/88, so it was perfect.
I was not involved in conversation with WWF, so only know what Sal told me, but they loved the idea but wanted to change it a "little".
They would show Sal and I in the audience at various events to build anticipation to the obvious debut.
Imagine Vince on commentary as the camera is on us "Look at that guy again, he is HUUUUUGE" and Ventura would add "What is he doing with that annoying pipsqueak?"
It was PERFECT for 1987/88 WWF.
But they thought it would be hysterical if Sal would finally make his debut after all the anticipation and be a clumsy, buffoon.
Those that know Sal can imagine his response.
He told me that he knew I was disappointed but he couldn't do it
Sal has never lost a fight in his life and his pedigree is amazing (not my story to tell).
I was bummed, but Sal was probably my closest friend at that time and understood.
He them proceeded to give me a bag of SKITTLES and we moved on.
Sal asked me not to tell too many people about it because he would have to answer questions about it 24/7, but it is part of the LEGEND of Big Sal.
RIP Sal and thank you for everything.
Your annoying sidekick,
'Rock Starr' Aka Chuck Kaye
PS: A funny aside. In 1989, Sal and I went to Wrestlemania in AC along with Dave Gizzo (RIP). Dozens asked him if he was a wrestler. He just grunted lol
