Whether you’re new to the Bible or you’ve been walking with God for years, having the right study Bible can make a world of difference in how you grow in your faith and enjoy your time with God. Personally, I’ve spent nearly 30 years in ministry, and for most of that time, I’ve relied on the KJV and NKJV study Bibles. They’ve been faithful companions in my study, and I’m sure you’d agree with me that having a Bible you can trust is key.
One of the things I love about my study Bibles is how well they align with my concordances and other resources. But no matter which Bible you choose, the most important thing is that it fits your study style, is easy to follow, and makes your time with God something you look forward to.
Here are my top 5 picks for beginners:
KJV (King James Version)
NKJV (New King James Version)
NIV (New International Version)
Life Application Study Bible (NLT)
NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible
So, why these Bibles? Let me explain.
One of the biggest challenges when starting to read the Bible is understanding what it actually means. Many verses can be hard to grasp, especially if you're just getting to know the Scriptures. This is where a Bible with clear, modern language comes in. It makes all the difference in how easily you can connect with the text. This is why versions like NIV and NKJV are great—they balance readability with accuracy, helping beginners (and even seasoned readers) feel confident and engaged.
As you dive deeper into the Bible, you’ll likely find yourself asking questions about historical context, difficult passages, and how it all connects. This is where the study notes, maps, and charts in these Bibles come in handy. They offer clarity, historical background, and explanations that help you understand what you’re reading and why it matters. These features don’t just help you read the Bible—they help you live it.
One of my favorite features in a good study Bible is the introduction to each book. Before you dive into a new book of the Bible, these introductions provide an overview of its theme, the author, the historical context, setting, and purpose. Knowing this up front helps you understand the “big picture” before you start reading, which makes it easier to connect the dots as you go along.
Ultimately, the right study Bible is the one that helps you grow in your faith, deepens your understanding of Scripture, and enhances your relationship with God. Don’t be afraid to take your time exploring different options. The goal is to find a Bible that resonates with you and makes your study time a joy, not a chore.

Where do I start? It's the most common questions for anyone who is beginning to study the Bible. Overcoming common hesitations when beginning Bible Study is key to a successful plan. There are tons of answers to this question depending on who you are following and their perspective on how to study the Bible. What do you think? How would you answer that question?
I would like to offer 5 tips that I think you can implement without feeling like you are making your Bible Study a legalistic ritual instead time spent with God building your relationship with Him through His Word.
Tip 1: Start small – Choose a manageable amount of scripture. It really doesn't matter what book you decide to choose as long as you are comfortable and know why you want to begin there. Personally I started with Genesis, Exodus, jumped to Psalms, then the Gospels, so don't feel compelled to follow someone else's rules. Listen to your heart and follow that.
Tip 2: Set a consistent time and place for study, meaning daily. Life is always happending and when we set a time and then are unable to manage it we feel defeated. I think about my day, my best time to spend with God and His word is the evening after everyone is asleep, or very early in the morning when I get up, or in the car during my lunchbreak, or at my desk before the business of the day begins....get it! I simply make time each day to acknowledge and honor God.
Tip 3: Pray before and after studying for understanding and application. We need to be prayerful about everything and asking God for revelation and understanding of Scripture is important as we grow in our faith. Prayer is how we communicate with God. It is our partnership with Him on a continual basis.
Tip 4: Use a simple study method (like Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer (SOAP) or journaling).
Tip 5: Stay accountable by sharing your journey with a friend or group. It is always great to have a community as you continue to grow in your faith. That looks different for different people depending on where you live and how Christianity is embraced.
These are just a few suggested tips to get you started. As I mentioned nothing is etched in stone and you never want to create a plan that will make you feel condemned if you are not able to meet your specifications. Stay flexible when it come to your fellowship time with God. Jesus prayed in the morning, at night, on the mountains, in the garden, so don't feel stuck in once place or space.

Where do I begin my faith journey when it comes to quiet time, especially setting aside time and space for my Bible Study routine? I begin with the desire to have a special daily devotional with God the Father everyday. So, I ask myself, how do I create a quiet time routine for Bible study? It's easy and can be done any time of day or evening but the key is to be intentional even if you need to shift the time, the routine can be the same.
Here are 5 steps to a focused Bible study routine I feel will be helpful to get you started.
Step 1. Designate a specific space and time. It doesn't have to be in a closet, the space can be where you will be uninterrupted for the time frame you determine works for you.
Step 2. Gather materials (Bible, notebook, pen, etc.). If it is a place where you can leave it that's fine, however, when you are journaling I would suggest to keep your notebook/journals close to your heart and not where anyone can pick up and read.
Step 3. Start with prayer to calm your heart and mind. Take a few deep breaths. If you are not sure about your prayer life or feel you don't know how to pray, I suggest reading passages from the Book of Psalm. It's ok to begin this way. There are many people who don't understand the principles of prayer as a new Christian but it will come in time as you learn more.
Step 4. Focus on a favorite passage or theme (love, peace, faith, etc.) in Scripture. As a beginner I would simply open my Bible in Psalm, Proverbs, or the Gospels, and read a passage and not be too concerned if I was getting it right.
Step 5. End with a reflection or takeaway. You can write anything that comes to mind in your journal. Keep it light and don't stress if you do not get anything specific during that time. Just relax and enjoy your quiet time.
I also created a three ring binder to keep any printable downloads handy from different ministries that I know will be helpful in my studies. You can download your free "Quiet Time Checklist" to add to or begin your resource library here. I hope this is helpful to get you going in your faith journey.

What is the SOAP Method of Bible Study and how does it work? How will this method help me in my spiritual growth? SOAP stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer and I recommend this method and to connect with your quiet time study steps in the previous blog. Why? it is simple, structure and effective. When we become overwhelmed with "how to" steps we tend to not do anything. This can be true of our Bible study. When we have too many steps or our lives are already complicated we will not add any additional stress by trying to figure out how to study our Bibles.
How the SOAP method works:
S - (Scripture) - Write out or underline a key verse in the Bible - If you underline it note chapter and verse in your journal along with the date for future reference.
O - (Observation) - What stands out to you - write that in your journal without too much analyzing (you will build on your study by learning strategic methods that take your observations to the next level later on).
A - (Application) - How can you apply this to your life? - It will be different for everyone. Try not to think of others that may need this Scripture application. This time is for you and your faith walk.
P - (Prayer) - Pray about what you've learned. - Ask God to help you with the application of what you discovered.
For example: Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me" (KJV) What stands out to me is that I can do all things. All things means anything that I am doing at the time, but I can only get the job done through Christ who gives me the strength to get the job done. That is my personal observation. What stands out to you?
Next, how would I apply it to my life? I would think of one thing in my life that is challenging me the most, good or bad, and confess that Scripture over myself, maybe write it on a index card or sticky note to remind myself when I feel weary in that situation or circumstance. What would you do?
Finally, I would pray about what God is showing me and ask His help as while applying what the Scripture say to my life. I would pray for myself and anyone involved. I would ask for wisdom, understanding, and peace. I would also allow the Holy Spirit to speak to my heart about the situation and following His leading.
All of us will have different responses to the same Scripture but it applies to each of us as God's children and His loving kindness to help us become mature in our faith. As you continue to journal you will learn more and more and any Scripture you are focusing on will become a part of your lifestyle. We don't study the Bible simply to read it but to make it a part of our lifestyles. As a new Believer, take advantage of SOAP and you will be amazed at what you are learning about the Bible.

Yellow, pink, green, orange, blue, which one suits you? Personally I like to use color pens and underline but whatever your preference highlighting is a great tool which helps you personalize your study and believe it or not, track your growth. Once you deicide on a study Bible it becomes your best friend and goes with you everywhere. I take mine on trips, to church, ministry conferences, etc., it sits on my desk because I never know when God will speak a word and I want to record it in a special way. I write notes on the side margins with arrows, pictures of eyes, and all sorts of symbols I create to remind me of a revelation I received from my study or the ministry of the Word that day. I also record in my journal any thoughts that come to mind. When I became a Christian I never wrote in my Bible until I attended Bible School and our instructor made us journal as part of the class assignment. From that time forward I have always highlighted, underlined, took notes in my Bible, and journaled, It's a great tool since I am able to look back at my growth and be reminded of the promises God has kept in my life.
My tips for highlighting and taking notes are:
Assign colors to themes (e.g., promises, commands, warnings). If that works for you. I like certain colors so I keep it simple.
Take notes. Don't be afraid of writing in your Bible, it's YOURS.
Use sticky notes, tabs to help you find the books of the Bible and/or write in a separate journal, I have at least 50 or more journals I used down through the years.
Check out my YouTube video on Finding a Good Study Bible, here, where I discuss what makes a good study Bible and included effective Bible marking tips. Keep in mind you don't have to write or highlight in your Bibles every time you pick it up. It's up to you how your brain processes note taking and/or highlighting. Make it your OWN!

What is a cross-reference and how does it deepen your Bible study? Cross-references are used in a variety of different ways in Scripture study. It is a very effective Bible study tool and without it you would never be able to find related text to the topics you are studying. I have created a YouTube video Finding a Good Study Bible discussing different types of study Bibles for an effective study and I always recommend owning a Bible that is full of cross-references of every kind.
I love to use my cross-reference online resource I have on my phone app called KAIROS. It is a free download and correlates with the King James Version of the Bible and has the Strong concordance along with other Bible study tools. When I am at my computer I use eSword as my online resource, which provides many free dictionaries, maps, Bible version and cross-references. I also have a Dakes Study Bible which is a tremendous study resource and very easy to use. When you purchase a study Bible it should not only include cross-references for Scripture but maps, topics, etc. I would suggest to never solely count on the computer or online resources, always have a soft or hard cover Bible for your personal study.
How do you use a cross-reference? Say you are studying John 3:16. When you look at that Scripture in your Bible, in the margins there will be a key word or other Scriptures that relate to it depending on which Bible you own. Mark your Scripture before turning to and reading the other Scriptures. You will see how that Scripture is related to John 3:16. The is how your Bible study grows and is enhanced. It will take you on what I a bunny trail sometimes which is a good thing. I learn so much when using cross references and gain more understanding of my study during that time.
Check out my blog on What Bible Translations are Best for Beginners for additional insight. Make it a great study and take your time, it does not all come at once. As you study, like with anything else, you will become more familiar with the process and will grow from there.
