This module will introduce a current critical AI debate. It will focus on the introduction of the concept of intersectional discrimination, grounded on black feminism and decolonial theories. Intersectionality assumes that all forms of discrimination are interlocked in how society is structured, which is rooted into colonial and oppressive practices. In a second part, this module will discuss the issues of image related biases, such as facial recognition and emotion detection. Technologies that intend to make an improvement in management and automated decision making but that are based on technical failures.
