1. Introduction
Bhugtan Sunao ("the App", "we", "us", "our") is developed to help small merchants, shopkeepers, and individuals in India hear their UPI payment confirmations announced aloud, without needing a separate paid soundbox device.
This Privacy Policy explains what information the App interacts with, how it is used, and - most importantly - what happens to it. This Policy applies to the Bhugtan Sunao Android application distributed via Google Play.
Bhugtan Sunao is built as an offline-first application. It does not request internet access as an Android permission, and is therefore technically incapable of sending any data from your device to us, or to any third party, at any time.
Every statement in this Policy follows from that single architectural fact: there is no server this App can send data to, because it was never built with the ability to connect to one.
We want to state this plainly, before describing what the App does process:
• We do not collect your name, phone number, email address, or any account information - the App has no login, no account, and no registration of any kind.
• We do not collect your UPI PIN, card details, net banking passwords, OTPs, or any banking login credentials.
• We do not use any analytics, crash-reporting, or advertising SDK - no Firebase, no Crashlytics, no Google Analytics, and no third-party tracking of any kind.
• We do not use cookies, device fingerprinting, or advertising identifiers.
• We do not sell, rent, trade, or share any data with third parties, because we never receive any data from you to begin with.
To do its job, the App reads and stores certain information - entirely on your device, and never transmitted anywhere:
• Payment notification content. When a supported UPI app posts a payment notification, the App reads the amount, sender name, and reference number from that notification's text, in order to announce it aloud and record it in your local Transaction History.
• Voice queries. If you use the voice assistant feature, your spoken question is recognised entirely on-device using Android's built-in speech recognition service. No audio recording is retained after recognition completes. A short local history of the text of your questions (up to your 20 most recent) is kept so you can review what you've asked - this history is never sent to a server.
• Unrecognised notification samples. If a notification from one of the supported UPI apps doesn't clearly match a known payment pattern, the App may store a sanitised copy of that notification's text locally (up to the 30 most recent) to help diagnose why - personal details such as UPI IDs and phone numbers are automatically removed before anything is stored. This exists only to help improve the App's matching accuracy over time and is never sent anywhere unless you explicitly export it, as described in Section 7.
• App settings and preferences. Your chosen language, voice, and similar settings.
• An optional QR code image. If you choose to use the Display QR Code feature, the image you select through Android's system photo picker is stored privately within the App's own storage.
• Which of the App's supported UPI apps are installed on your device. Used only to show accurate installed/not-installed status in the App's own Supported Apps screen. The App cannot see your device's full list of installed apps - only whether each app on its own specific, named list is present.
None of this information ever leaves your device on its own. There is no server for it to be sent to.
The App's Lite mode - a simplified interface offered alongside the standard Full experience - reads from and processes exactly the same information described above. Lite does not collect, store, or process anything beyond what's listed in this section; it simply presents a smaller set of screens on top of the same on-device data.
• Notification Access - required to detect and read payment notifications from the specific UPI apps the App supports. This is the one permission the App cannot function without.
• Microphone - used only if you choose to ask the voice assistant a question. Entirely optional; the App works fully without it.
• Foreground Service - keeps the notification listener running reliably while the App is in the background.
• Bluetooth - used only to detect and route announcements to a connected Bluetooth speaker, if you use one.
• Photo access (one-time, via Android's system photo picker) - used only if you choose to upload a UPI QR code image. The App receives only the single image you select and does not browse, scan, or access any other files on your device.
• Package visibility (a technical declaration, not a runtime permission you're asked to grant) - the App declares the specific, named list of UPI apps it supports, so it can check whether each one is installed on your device and show you an accurate installed/not-installed status. This declaration only covers the App's own supported-apps list; it does not let the App see or list every other app installed on your device.
The App does not request, and cannot function with, internet access, precise or approximate location, contacts, SMS, call logs, or general/broad storage access.
• Transaction history is kept locally on your device for up to 366 days and is then automatically deleted.
• Your voice query history and unrecognised notification samples are each capped (at 20 and 30 entries respectively) and trimmed automatically as new entries are added, so only the most recent are ever kept.
• You can delete your transaction history, voice query history, or unrecognised notification samples independently at any time from within the App, or delete your entire local App data at once.
• Uninstalling the App removes all locally stored data along with it, since no copy exists anywhere else.
The App lets you export your transaction history, or your unrecognised notification samples, as a password-protected file. You then choose where to send that file yourself, using your phone's own share menu (email, cloud storage, messaging apps, or anywhere else you pick).
This is the only way data can leave your device, and it only happens when you deliberately choose to export and pick a destination yourself - the App never does this automatically, in the background, or without your direct action. Before exporting, the App shows a clear warning that once a file leaves the App, its security depends on how and where you store or share it afterward.
Information stored by the App is encrypted at rest on your device using EncryptedSharedPreferences, an Android security library built on AES-256 encryption. The App explicitly disables Android's automatic cloud backup for its own data, so this information is never included in a device or cloud backup.
Bhugtan Sunao reads notifications from certain UPI and payment-capable applications referenced within the App (such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, WhatsApp, and others) in order to provide its service. Bhugtan Sunao is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any of these applications or their operators, and this Policy does not cover their practices. Please refer to each respective application's own privacy policy for how they handle your information.
Bhugtan Sunao is intended for use by adults operating a business, such as shopkeepers and merchants, and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from children - and, consistent with the rest of this Policy, we do not collect information from any user, of any age, since no information leaves the device on which the App is installed.
Because the App does not transmit data anywhere on its own, no cross-border transfer of your information occurs as a result of using this App, other than through your own deliberate choice of where to send an exported file, as described in Section 7.
Because all information is stored exclusively on your own device and under your direct control at all times, you can access, review, export, or delete it at any time directly within the App. There is no separate request process, because we hold no copy of your information to act upon on your behalf.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, including to reflect new features. Material changes will be reflected in the "Last Updated" date below. Significant changes will also be described within the App's own User Agreement Policy screen and in the app's release notes.
