The BHPS Band Program is an extra-curricular activity, employing professional conductors and a band manager who work to ensure the smooth running of the program. Supported by the school executive with a group of enthusiastic volunteers, the BHPS Band Program has an excellent reputation for producing talented musicians.
We'd like to invite you to be part of our successful team. Being part of large team like a band is an enjoyable, social experience, benefiting children in many ways. There is also compelling evidence for how playing an instrument benefits brain development. You may wish to view this short video which explains the long-term positive effects on the brain.
How Do I Join the Band?
Joining our Band Program is easy. Our band program experts take you and your child through a process that gives you all the information you need to begin your music journey with us.
There are a few steps to joining the band. We have have a program of events during term 4 that will help you and your child get to know the band program and the instruments.
Step 1 - Learn about the different instruments that make up a band. Come along to our Band Information Evening
During Term 4 there a opportunities for your child and you to understand about learning an instrument and joining the band program. In the videos below you will see our band students demonstrating the different instruments that make up a band and the US Navy band also gives an excellent demonstration of the instruments. Take the time to view these videos with your future musician.
Come along to the Band Information Evening (Term 4) to learn about the instruments and ask questions. Keep an eye on this website and the newsletter for details.
Step 2 - Register for an Instrument Suitability Assessment. This is an important step in joining band. All students who are new to playing an instrument must complete an instrument suitability test with our band conductors/tutors so that we can determine the right instrument for your child. Factors such as physical stature, muscle strength around the mouth area, results from aural tests, any developmental issues (physically or otherwise) your child may have and your child's preferences are all considered when deciding on an instrument for your child. The instrument your child would like to play sometimes isn't the right choice for them, due to the factors listed above, as it may not give them the best chance of success longer term. We want to make sure the learning of the instrument and their participation in band is a positive experience from the outset. The more information you can give us about your child on the sign up form will increase the likelihood that the right instrument choice will be made for them.
Please register to attend an Instrument Suitability Assessment and provide instrument preferences via the online form Junior/Training Band Registration Form.
Step 3 - Let's Get You Set Up for Band. Once your instrument is confirmed, we assist you with finding your instrument, tutor information, uniform requirements, communication, band fees and more.
