SHOWREEL
Audio Post Production For Moving Image - BSU Year 3
In this module we were assigned to different posts production roles such as Sound Designer, Dubbing Mixer, Supervising Sound Editor etc. and put into two teams that would act as a professional post production team.
I had been appointed as my team's Supervising Sound Editor and our team was put in contact with a group from the animation course. Alongside Acting as the SSE for our team I also worked on the 5.1 surround ambiences, these where comprised of pre-recorded ambience layers I assembled into fully detailed ambiences I also worked very closely with the dubbing mixer in our group and lent a hand with mixing and exporting the digital cinema package ready for a screening at the watershed which was arranged by the university.
This is where I found my interest in post production for film and where my aspiration to work in a professional post team started. Working on these animations not only gave me an opportunity to work with multiple visual creators and get a feel for what these interactions could be like in a professional context but also work on some more abstract sound design and expansive ideas which I found really fun to work on in a team of sound editors.
'Robot Cooking'
This is one of the examples of my work with 5.1 ambience and was the longest and more challenging animations we were tasked with working on.
Considering the realism featured in the short film I made sure to add as much depth as possible to each scene group, focussing on making the city feel populated and bustling. This gave me a good insight into how ambience can provide so much contextual information to a visual piece like this one.
There are only two robots featured in this animation but by adding more external interest such as cars heard outside buildings or operating dock ambience it extends the listeners idea of the world this film is set in.
Redesigns and Original Content
'Miles vs The Spot'
I've chosen this clip to redesign from 'Spider-man: Across the Spiderverse' because not only is the style really unique and it presents a very interesting aesthetic to work with, but it also brought the challenge of composing chaos.
Each character flows really nicely into each action which I found a nice contrast to the destruction happening throughout.
I made sure to focus on keeping the crashing and destruction sounds as a supporting layer, keeping them just prevalent enough to feature in the scene but not too overwhelming so it wouldn't distract from but rather compliment the more comedic actions of the characters.
The portal sound was also an interesting feature to work on as it required making a consistent sound that included some variation so as to not get repetitive.
I have isolated the dialogue for the original scene to how my redesign performs in context with it's other elements.
A Quiet Place - Intro scene
This clip from a quiet place was a good opportunity for me to experiment with how the ambience changes in different perpsectives of the same space.
Seeing as there is no external information suggesting this town is surrounded by a loud highway or any sort of typical constant ambience, I chose to focus on designing separate elements of the environment until the space sounded real.
I also found designing the sound of the car an interesting challenge as it made me consider not only the sounds of the engine, brakes and tires, but also the sounds of the chassis tumbling around or the squeak of the suspension.
I took the car door slamming as an opportunity to design a transition also. In the extended clip this cuts to a title card so it made sense to add something a bit more ominous at the end.
The 'KOPF' watch - Promotional Video
This clip is a combination of two videos I have filmed and edited to act as promotion for German Polosin's 'KOPF' watch.
The breif for these videos is to show the finishing and making process of the KOPF watch while being satisfying and interesting to watch. My solution was to record and foley in ASMR style audio to emphasise the intricate nature of the work.
I have been able to work very closely with the KOPF team and have been able to get a great inside look into the finishing process which has aided me in the creeative and technical aspects of filming and editing these videos.
This project has also given me a good amount of experience in not only foley and sound design, but also in time management, organisation and file management of both video and audio.
