BHASWATI MOOKERJEA

I am a Professor of Physics and currently the Chairperson of the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai.

My research is in the area of observational study of the physics and chemistry of the interstellar medium (ISM) and formation of high-mass stars. In particular I observe spectra arising from atoms (ions) and molecules in the far-infrared, sub-millimeter and millimeter wavelengths using ground-based and space-based (satellite and aeroplane) international observatories.

What's New?

We are collaborating with the Space Applications Centre, ISRO, Ahmedabad on the upcoming sub-mm telescope in India. The collaboration involves both science and instrumentation.
From TIFR I am leading a new multi-institute initiative on characterization of high altitude (>5000 m) Himalayan sites in India to check their suitability for building future Sub-mm/Optical/Near-infrared (not necessarily the same sites!) observatories.
