We are working on developing resources for our grad students and department.
If you have thoughts for things to add please let us know here.
BGSA Student Handbook
The BGSA Student Handbook will be a guide to new (and continuing) grad students covering living in Fairbanks (finding housing, car winterization, things to do, etc) and processes within the department that you will encounter (selecting committee members, thesis proposal defenses, annual meetings, etc).
This is currently in development!!!
In the mean time, take a look at the handbook put together by our friends at GIGSA here!!!
The UAF Science Graduate Students discord server is also a great place to discuss these things with current grad students!!
BGSA Mentoring Guide
The BGSA Mentoring Guide will actually be targeted to faculty and advisors, but will be a useful resource for students as well. The goal of this guide is to compile current "best practices" and ideas for successful mentor/mentee relationships. We hope students can refer to this guide to understand what they can/should expect from a mentor, help them ask their mentors for specific kinds of advising, and to improve communication with their mentors.
This is currently in development!!!
BGSA Officer Handbook
The BGSA Officer Handbook is intended to be a single resource for detailing the procedures for all BGSA activities/events/duties that the BGSA officers are in charge of, including MSSS, meetings, fundraising etc. Having this information compiled in a single place is intended to reduce the feeling of "reinventing the wheel" that previous groups of officers have faced and will hopefully result in a more active and developed BGSA. This handbook is typically only available to current officers, but if you would like to be more involved in BGSA or are thinking of becoming an officer, email us at uafbgsa@gmail.com and we would be happy to share some of it!
