Information on class structure, cost, and resources
Sometimes you want to learn something, but cannot commit to the six-week courses BGOP offers. We understand that, and when coming to a guild meeting and working with other smiths isn't enough to teach you what you need, there are opportunities for private instruction.
My appointment only, BGOP offers individualized instruction for up to three students at a time, at a rate of $50/person, per hour.
You can negotiate with your instructor exactly what you'd like to learn. Interested in blacksmithing at home, but not sure what it involves? Curious about knife-making? Want to make a special gift for family or friends? Two or three hours in the shop may be the right way to meet your needs without a large time commitment. You are buying time with a professional, it's up to you how to use it. Sit back and watch a process, or apply maximum effort yourself. Private lessons are also available to younger people with interest in forging steel, but either too young, or unavailable for the Beginner's course.
Private lessons are typically scheduled on a weekend morning, when the shop is not too busy. Checks should be payable to "BGOP" and are collected at the beginning of class. Please send email to thetidewaterforge@gmail.com to inquire about availability.
Students are expected to attend to their personal needs like adults, including modest use of phones, making sure they are well-fed and hydrated, appropriately clothed for the forge (non-flammable clothing like cotton or wool is best, close-toe shoes a must, and dressed for the weather of the season), and creating a good learning environment by supporting their fellow students' work and behaving maturely. Children are welcome, aged 8 and up, as long as a parent or responsible adult is physically present in case of emergency.*

Classes begin at 6pm Wednesday evenings. Please allow for quitting-time traffic as some of the local roads are very congested around 5pm. Please try to arrive early your first visit, and adjust accordingly. Please contact your instructor if you are running late or will miss class due to an emergency.
