Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose (blood sugar) levels, which over time leads to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves. There are different types:
TYPE I DIABETES: Known as youthful diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, it is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces a little bit or no insulin on its own.
TYPE II DIABETES: occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn't produce enough insulin, it is common in adults.
GESTATIONAL DIABETES: occurs when the body cannot produce enough insulin during pregnancy, and the woman is at risk of developing type II diabetes later on.
