If you want a rugged, high-output wired headphone that handles phones and tablets effortlessly without needing an amplifier, choose beyerdynamic DT990; if you need a featherlight, studio-grade reference monitor with extreme precision for long remote work sessions, choose Audio-Technica ATH-R70Xa.
• beyerdynamic DT990: Its biggest strength is the powerful, vibrant sound profile with deep bass and clear highs that appeals to pop and rock fans, while its trade-off is the heavy 32-ohm impedance that demands more power from some sources and the open-back design that leaks sound. This pick is for listeners who prioritize energetic music playback on mobile devices or laptops.
• Audio-Technica ATH-R70Xa: Its biggest strength is the ultra-lightweight 199g build and highly accurate frequency response designed for professional mixing, but its trade-off is the massive 470-ohm impedance that makes it nearly useless without a dedicated desktop amplifier. This pick is for audio engineers and remote workers who need absolute clarity and comfort over extended periods.
The beyerdynamic DT990 Premium 32 Ohm edition stands out as a workhorse for those who want immediate impact from their music without carrying extra gear. This combination is a significant advantage for anyone using a phone, tablet, or laptop directly. You do not need a bulky external DAC or amplifier to get good volume levels. The driver range spans from 5 Hz to 35,000 Hz, covering the full spectrum of human hearing with a focus on the mid-range and upper frequencies that make pop and rock tracks feel lively.
For the remote worker, this headset offers a specific kind of utility. The open-back design means that background noise outside the headphones remains clearly discernible even at higher volumes. While this might be a distraction in a quiet library, it is often a safety feature in a busy home office or a shared living space where you need to hear a doorbell or a family member calling you. The headband construction uses soft padded leatherette, which provides a secure fit, though the overall weight is listed at 0.2 kg. That is slightly heavier than the competition, but the adjustable nature of the band helps distribute that mass across the top of your head.

You should buy the DT990 if you value a "fun" sound signature that emphasizes bass and treble, creating a dynamic listening experience. The included 10-foot single-side cable gives you plenty of room to move around your desk without tripping over wires. The gold-plated 1/8-inch mini stereo jack and the included 1/4-inch adapter ensure compatibility with almost any consumer device you own. However, you should skip this model if you are looking for a neutral, flat response for critical audio editing or if you plan to use it in a silent environment where sound leakage is a concern. The open design simply cannot block out the world or keep your music inside.
The Audio-Technica ATH-R70Xa is engineered with a different philosophy entirely. It is a professional flagship open-back reference headphone built for accuracy above all else. The most striking feature in the specifications is the weight: only 199 grams. This featherlight design is achieved through a streamlined, metal-reinforced construction and reimagined headband geometry. For someone working remotely for eight hours straight, this reduction in mass is transformative. It eliminates the pressure points that often plague heavier headphones during long video calls or deep-focus coding sessions.
The acoustic engineering here targets the discerning engineer or producer. With a frequency response of 5 Hz to 35,000 Hz and a sensitivity of 97 dB, the goal is pure, uncolored sound reproduction. The fully open-back design allows unrestricted airflow, which eliminates internal resonance and provides extremely quick transient response. This means fast musical passages are rendered with precision, allowing you to hear every detail in a mix. The earpads are replaceable velour, chosen specifically for breathability and comfort during marathon sessions. Unlike the leatherette on the DT990, velour tends to stay cooler against the skin over time.
However, the ATH-R70Xa comes with a significant caveat regarding connectivity. The impedance is listed at a staggering 470 ohms. This is not a mistake; it is a deliberate choice for professional studio environments where signal purity is paramount. If you plug these into a standard smartphone or a basic laptop headphone jack, they will likely be too quiet to use effectively. You absolutely need a dedicated headphone amplifier with sufficient voltage swing to drive them. The dual-sided 3.0-meter detachable locking cable ensures proper stereo orientation and reduces strain on the connection point, but the requirement for a powerful amp limits its portability compared to the DT990.
This headphone is for the remote worker who treats their workspace like a command center. If your daily routine involves analyzing audio, participating in high-fidelity conference calls where voice clarity is non-negotiable, or simply needing to hear the subtle nuances of a podcast or audiobook without fatigue, this is the tool. The Japanese craftsmanship mentioned in the documentation suggests rigorous testing before leaving the Tokyo factory, implying a level of build quality intended for daily professional abuse. But if you are on the go, or if your setup lacks a dedicated amplifier, this unit will remain silent.
• Best for battery-free convenience → beyerdynamic DT990 (No batteries needed, but requires less amplification).
• Best for portability with mobile devices → beyerdynamic DT990 (32 Ohm impedance works directly with phones and laptops).
• Best for long-duration comfort → Audio-Technica ATH-R70Xa (199g weight significantly reduces neck strain).
• Best for neutral, reference-grade audio → Audio-Technica ATH-R70Xa (Designed for flat response and transparency).
• Best for bass-heavy genres → beyerdynamic DT990 (Distinctive highs and lows tailored for pop and rock).
• Best for studio monitoring → Audio-Technica ATH-R70Xa (High 470 Ohm impedance ensures signal integrity with pro amps).
• Best for hearing surroundings → Both are open-back, but DT990 is better for general awareness due to easier driving.
• Best for cable management → Audio-Technica ATH-R70Xa (Dual-sided detachable locking cable prevents twisting).
In my opinion, for the specific use case of remote work in 2026, the beyerdynamic DT990 is the more practical choice for the average user, while the Audio-Technica ATH-R70Xa is the superior tool for the audio professional. Most remote workers do not have a dedicated headphone amplifier on their desk. They rely on their laptop or tablet to drive their audio. In that scenario, the 32-ohm DT990 is the only logical choice because it delivers loud, clear sound immediately. The 470-ohm ATH-R70Xa, despite being lighter and more comfortable, is effectively unusable without additional hardware investment. If you are a professional mixer or sound engineer working from home, the ATH-R70Xa is worth the extra cost of an amp. Otherwise, the DT990 offers the best balance of performance, ease of use, and comfort for daily tasks.
Both models are open-back, meaning they do not have active noise cancellation. The beyerdynamic DT990 is easier to drive with a laptop microphone setup, while the Audio-Technica ATH-R70Xa requires a dedicated amplifier to function properly. Neither blocks out external noise, so you will hear your environment.
Yes. The specifications list an impedance of 470 ohms, which is extremely high for consumer devices. Without a powerful amplifier, these headphones will be very quiet and lack dynamic range. The beyerdynamic DT990, at 32 ohms, does not require one.
Neither is ideal for noisy public transport due to the open-back design, which leaks sound and lets noise in. However, the beyerdynamic DT990 has a plastic enclosure and a fixed cable, making it robust for casual handling. The Audio-Technica ATH-R70Xa features a metal-reinforced frame and detachable cables, suggesting high durability in a studio setting, but the delicate components require careful handling.
Technically yes, but practically no. The 470-ohm impedance means a smartphone will struggle to produce audible volume. The beyerdynamic DT990, with its 32-ohm rating, is explicitly designed for phones, tablets, and MP3 players.
