What I can offer / Prices
Maths
Mathematics tutoring ages 5 - 12 employing a Mastery approach, particularly a focus on concrete-pictorial-abstract whereby children can grasp the concept physically, seeing the inner workings of a problem before progressing to more abstract concepts. This is interactive, engaging and where possible, multisensory.
Although I have developed a scheme of work for the year, any areas that you wish to focus on (ie: times tables) can be given special attention.
I was surprised to learn as an adult that I have mild dyscalculia, so I understand the difficulties and anxieties that some people have around maths. I have learnt not only to overcome my maths anxiety, but have also learnt to love mathematical processes and the challenges that comes with problem solving. My aim is to make maths fun and less intimidating!
English
English and grammar can be quite dry, so instead of English lessons, I deliver a 1-to-1 "Book Club". I teach particular English skills using a range of fun, age-appropriate texts that children will love. For example: Our first Autumn Term unit will teach adjectives, nouns and verbs, and how to construct expanded noun phrases and character descriptions, by reading and discussing The Twits by Roald Dahl.
Children will always get the opportunity to be creative with language, compose passages, stories, poems and experiment with descriptive language - the sillier the better!
Handwriting: I have always felt that the ability to construct an articulate language composition is more important than the delivery. However, all children will have the opportunity to practice their handwriting in the process of various exercises, even if this is only note-taking or drafting. I have come to understand that some children do not enjoy the process of handwriting and find they are quicker and more comfortable publishing their ideas on a word processor. I have a laptop they can use and this is fine by me unless you feel you would like to encourage neat handwriting practice as part of our sessions together.
Reading: Reading will be an integral part of our Book Club. If your child needs extra help with their reading I have an extensive knowledge of Phonics and am trained in the delivery of discrete phonics sessions to build on their knowledge and practice their skills. I consider the ability to teach children to read using phonics as one of my standout strengths as a teacher. I also have a range of resources to assist dyslexic children, from coloured reading rulers to the Toe By Toe programme.
Science Club! WEDNESDAYS 9.30am - 11.30am
Calling all young scientists! Science Club is an exciting group learning opportunity for all.
Science is ALWAYS more fun as a team - which is why this is a club, and not 1-to-1 tutoring. Ages 5 - 12, all welcome.
We will be covering living things, animals including humans, space, light and sound, forces, chemical reactions, electricity, properties of materials, and weather and climate, and the fun doesn't stop there!
We will be learning and using the skills involved in working scientifically - the way that scientists ACTUALLY work, by conducting our own investigations, asking our own questions and doing our own research.
I am SUPER excited about this! :D
Spaces are very limited so please book now to avoid disappointment.
