In 2024, Be Well Waupaca County hosted its first resource fair, distributed over 200 holiday food bundles to low income households, planted four garden beds to donate produce to the Waupaca Library Little Free Pantry, and created the Food Justice Exhibit, which highlighted the importance of a thriving food system.
2023 was a year of growth for us. We expanded our focus beyond nutrition and physical activity, rebranded, and pursued nonprofit status. Additionally, we raised almost $3,000 from the Superhero Fun Run, collaborated on community activities like the Eco Park and Halloween on Main, and donated produce grown at the community garden to the Little Free Pantry at the Waupaca Area Public Library.
In 2021, 136 individuals participated in the Superhero Fun Run, including families and young children. Through the freezer-fridge program, we awarded 5 freezers, 4 top-freezer refrigerators, 1 upright convertible freezer-refrigerator, and 1 commercial-grade freezer to applicants. Coalition members also volunteered at the Halloween on Main Event, providing apples, popcorn, and apple cinnamon water as healthy alternatives to candy.
In 2019, we launched a new community garden on the ThedaCare grounds in Waupaca, resulting in 510 pounds of fresh produce donated to several local organizations. We introduced Electronic Balance Transfer (EBT) at the Farm Market, increasing accessing to fresh produce for individuals and families in the FoodShare program. We also hosted our 1st Annual Superhero Fun Run as Living the Waupaca Way, where 132 adults and children took part in the fun! The event has been a tradition for 30 years, previously hosted by ThedaCare.
In 2018, we hosted 5 community events, promoted healthy food choices at partner events, expanded the Waupaca Farm Market, and participated in the Healthy Wisconsin Leadership Institution. We also hosted a Hunger Simulation in collaboration with the Waupaca Area Food Pantry, where participants learned about how a person's social, economic or environment can impact access to healthy, affordable food.
