Africa CDC – new kid on the regional bloc: Implications for African regional cooperation in health

My current PhD research looks at the role of regional coordination in bridging global health governance gaps. More specifically at regional cooperation in health in the African region, by taking a closer look at Africa CDC’s rapid rise to dominance during the recent COVID-19 pandemic and asking what implications their response has for future regional cooperation. What is the perceived role and need for regional institutions in health in Africa currently and to what extent are national and regional expectations being met? I’m taking an interdisciplinary approach, looking at regional bodies in theory, in historical context, in current perceptions, and in practice, in order to learn more about where regional energies in health can best be directed.

I'm fortunate to be supervised by LSE colleagues Justin Parkhurst, Ernestina Coast and Clare Wenham.

African Health Observatory Platform on Health Systems and Policies

My day job at LSE is co-leading the LSE team working on on the African Health Observatory Platform on Health Systems and Policies (AHOP). Hosted by the WHO's Regional Office for Africa (WHO AFRO), AHOP is a regional partnership to support and promote the transfer of evidence and experience between countries to foster better policies and action for improved health and wellbeing. AHOP leverages existing national and regional collaborations to form a network of National Centres that currently include leading research institutions in Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda and Senegal. The platform draws on support from a technical consortium including the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, LSE and national, regional and global partners.
