Welcome!

Hi, I'm Beth.  I'm an Associate Professor at Carleton University in Ottawa, ON, Canada in the School of Linguistics and Language Studies.

In my research, I take an experimental approach to studying the production and perception of phonetic variation.  I am particularly interested in the phenomenon of phonetic imitation (also known as phonetic convergence) and what it can tell us about the nature of the mental representation of speech sounds, second language acquisition, and sound change.

I teach both undergraduate and graduate courses at Carleton and currently serve as Associate Director of Linguistics, Secretary of the Faculty of Arts and Social Science Executive, and on Senate.

I'm interested in working with Master's and PhD students on issues of phonetic variability in production and perception.  If you're interested in these things, please reach out!
