Fight COVID-19

CPAP (DECATHLON) MASK FOR NON-INVASIVE VENTILATORY SUPPORT

Faced with the global emergency of the number of patients affected by Covid-19, healthcare personnel have had to become innovative to make up for the lack of respiratory support and personal protection equipment. A team of Italian doctors and engineers has successfully adapted a diving mask from the retailer DECATHLON, turning it into a non-invasive ventilation support mask (Source: https://www.isinnova.it/easy-covid19-eng/)

An international working group comprised of experts from the Innovation program Business Engineering and Surgical Technologies "B.E.S.T" led by Professor Silvana Perretta from IRCAD and IHU-Strasbourg was inspired by the Italian concept developed by ISINNOVA. The working group, which includes Professor Stefano Stramigioli’s team from the University of Technical Medicine in Twente (Netherlands), Stéphane Cotin and his team from INRIA, and John O'Dea, CEO of Palliare (Ireland), worked in collaboration with the Respiratory Medicine department of the Nouvel Hôpital Civil (NHC) hospital of Strasbourg (France) to improve and adapt the initial concept. We were able to quickly set up a production line for the connector valves thanks to our partners, and to the NHC pulmonologists who confirmed the mask's effectiveness

In order to increase the diffusion of this emergency solution

you will find all the instructions for its manufacture here

S-VALVE STL file:

The valve together with the adapted mask can be used with CPAP or BiPAP ventilators

Recommended setting according to our experience and ventilation mode:

  • For CPAP: PEEP between 6-10 cm H2O (be aware of possible leakage from expiratory valve!)

  • For BiPAP: PEEP is recommended with a minimal inspiratory assistance (e.g: PEEP 8 cm H2O, AI 4 cm H2O) and to adapt O2 according to sp02 (<92%)

WARNING: The solution described in this document is an EMERGENCY solution that could potentially be applied answering the challenges of the current COVID-19 crisis. It is NO regular approved method that has been clinically validated and contains components that do not have a CE mark for clinical use! Application of the solution and its components is the full responsibility of the medical professional responding to the COVID-19 crisis

About us

We are a multidisciplinary group of clinicians, engineers, student, and entraopreneurs who joined forces to try to help with the corinavirus crisis. Initaited by the the faculty of the Business Engineering and Surgical Technologies "B.E.S.T" Innovation course coordinated by the IRCAD and IHU-Strasbourg centers in France (Silvana Perretta, Stefano Stramigioli, Bernard Dallemagne, Pietro Riva, John O'Dea, Sebastien Piant, Stephane Cotin, Antonello Forgione and others), this effort was immediatley joined by a team of scientists and physicians from the University of Twente in the Netherlands (Remke Burie, Frans de Jongh, Ruus Verdaasdonk, Stefano Stramigioli, Vincent Groenhius, Françoise Siepel, Riccardo Sneep, Tim Broenick, Sander Smit). Additional support and feedback were provided not only bu clinicians of the NHC, Michele Porzio, Frédéric de Blay), but also by those of several hospitals in Italy who shared their unique and unprecedented experience.

Many thanks to DECATHLON France who graciously provided us with the masks so that we could start the tests and distribution quickly
