Best Action at the 2021 MTV Movie & TV Awards

After the pageant was delayed for a year due to the coronavirus pandemic, a winner of the 2021 Miss Universe pageant was crowned on May 16, 2021.

After more than a year delay due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Miss Universe competition was finally held on May 16 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. It was hosted by Mario Lopez and former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo, who won the crown in 2012, and featured a special performance by Luis Fonsi.

Taking home the ultimate crown this year was Miss Mexico Andrea Meza who wowed the selection community with her beauty and brains.

Top Gun: Maverick:

During the final statement round, Miss Mexico was asked to address the topic of changing beauty standards. "We live in a society that more and more is more advanced and as we have advanced as a society, we have advanced with stereotypes," she shared via translator. "Nowadays, beauty is not only the way we look. For me, beauty radiates not only in our spirits, but in our hearts and the way we conduct ourselves. Never permit someone to tell you that you are not valuable."

And just minutes before, Miss Mexico also faced the final question round where she was asked to share how she would have handled the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I believe there is not a perfect way to handle this hard situation such as COVID-19," she explained. "However, I believe that what I would have done was create the lockdown even before everything was that big because we lost so many lives and we cannot afford that. We have to take care of our people. That's why I would have taken care of them since the beginning."

Before the show, Paula M. Shugart, who serves as the president of the Miss Universe Organization, addressed the pandemic and how the pageant was staying safe. In a statement, she explained, "We have spent months planning and preparing safety precautions to develop this edition of Miss Universe—one that will be memorable, special and totally innovative."

At the time, Zozibini really impressed the judges with her answer to the question, "What is the most important thing we should be teaching girls today?"

She replied, "I think the most important thing we should be teaching young girls today is leadership. It's something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time. Not because we don't want to, but because what society has labelled women to be. I think we are the most powerful beings in the world."

Of passing the torch to her successor, Zozibini said in a statement, "I always knew that my reign as Miss Universe would be unlike any other. While it was nothing like what I had imagined my year to be, this year has opened doors for me I could never have imagined. I am so grateful for the opportunity to connect virtually with people all over the world and elevate the causes I care most about."

The 40-year-old Friday Night Lights actress and the 37-year-old host of The Daily Show have broken up after dating for about a year, People and Entertainment Tonight reported on Sunday, May 16.

Last August, an insider confirmed to E! News that Minka and Trevor have been seeing each other for "several months," adding that she has been living with him in New York City for awhile and that things were "getting serious" between them. In September, they were photographed together for the first time, getting out of an SUV and walking into his apartment.

In January, Trevor bought a $27.5 million mansion in Los Angeles' Bel-Air neighborhood. "They are still together and very much in love," another insider told E! News at the time.

Then in February, on the TV host's birthday, he and the Titans actress were photographed grabbing some In-N-Out Burger in L.A. Minka was later spotted leaving a Party City store holding a bunch of balloons.

The two have not been photographed together in public since then. However, over the weekend, Trevor was spotted without her at a party at the Pool at Strawberry Moon at the Goodtime Hotel in Miami Beach, Fla., a source there told E! News, adding that the star hung out onstage with Steve Aoki behind the DJ booth and hyped up the crowd.

Trevor and Minka have not commented publicly about their breakup. In fact, they'd remained mum about their relationship since it began.

Last year's pageant was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic, but now, it's time for the 74 contestants to show the judges what they got.

On Friday, May 14, all of the women gathered at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., to model their costumes as part of the preliminary competition. While some ladies went for patriotic looks that celebrate their country's biggest exports, others went for traditional ensembles from the region.

It's just one of the many competition categories that the women are judged on ahead of Sunday night, at which point only 21 will be left in the running.

Olivia Culpo, who won Miss Universe in 2012, will join Mario Lopez to co-host the ceremony, which is set to air live at 8 p.m. ET on FYI. Additionally, it will be broadcasted in Spanish on Telemundo.

After being postponed a year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 69th annual Miss Universe competition is back on.

On Friday, May 14, two days before the 2021 ceremony, the 74 contestants took part in preliminary contests, showcasing Ema Savhal Couture swimsuits paired with flowing turquoise, pink, peach and blue cover-ups, as well as elegant evening gowns and elaborate costumes representing their countries and territories.

Not all of them will qualify to take part in the main ceremony, which will air live on Sunday, May 16. Only 21 contestants will advance to the main pageant, first competing in the swimsuit contest, after which 10 of them will advance to the evening gown competition. Five finalists will then be chosen to take part in the question and answer round. At the end, Miss Universe 2019 and South African beauty Zozibini Tunzi, the longest-ever reigning title-holder, will crown her successor.

Mario Lopez and Miss USA 2012 and Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo are co-hosting the televised competition. This marks the first time since 2015 that Steve Harvey will not host the annual event and the second time Lopez will serve as host since 2017.
