I have used twixtor myself for a few projects but I have never had terrific success with it. One of the best filmmakers I know who uses Twixtor really well is my friend Salomon Ligthelm, whom I met when he lived in Dubai back in January last year. He put up a new video a couple of days ago, Gravity, and he was kind enough to write this guest blog post on how to get the best out of it.

Twixtor will not give you as good results as a dedicated high speed camera of course. They do that job incredibly well. You need to light a lot to make them work but as you will read below you need to do the same with twixtor to get the high shutter speeds needed. But for those whose budget means renting a Phantom Flex or something similar is out of the question Salomon guides you through the best ways to make the most out this powerful, but tricky plug-in.

In the clip I imported, I want some parts to be slow motion and other parts normal speed. I know I can use retime controls to vary speed in different parts of the clip, but I want the highest quality slow motion. I saw in one of Casey Faris's video's that he said the best way to get quality slow motion is to change the Clip Attributes - Video Frame Rate. I can change the clip attributes video frame rate from 119.88 to 23.976 which slows the clip down to 20% and it is silky smooth. However, that slows down the ENTIRE clip and I don't have the option to do normal speed in some parts of the clip without using retime controls to make other parts faster. I also can't seem to import the same clip a second time to have one at 119.88 and the other at 23.976 (with clip attributes modified).

For the slowest but best quality set to 240P in HFR mode. You only get 4-second bursts, but in slow motion that becomes 32 seconds if you choose 1080 30p as your setting. The camera will automatically make the slow motion video. If you choose 24P you get 10X slow motion; 30p 8X.

So do I need to set the frame rate at 250fps and the record setting at 25p 50M to get the best quality? Could this then be slowed down further in software on my Mac or would I be better off recording it slower in the first place?

Yes, 250 fps, 25p 50M. Quality priority gives you 4 seconds at highest quality. If you want more time you can choose lower quality (time priority). I think it is 8 seconds. At 250 fps and 25p high quality you will get 10X slow motion and a 40 second video clip. That is very long and very slow. You cannot really make it any slower though in post unless you make a video at a frame rate slower than 25p. Start trigger just means it starts recording/shooting when you press the record button.

Shoot your video regularly in 4K, this way you have no time limits, then slow it down in post to whatever you want, understanding that the slower you want to go the lower your resolution becomes but if you start off in 4K you have plenty of head room to go super super super slow and still be @1080p.

My understanding is resolution has nothing to do with speed. I you shot your clips at 4Kp24 and change the duration to 25% (slowing it 4X), you still get your 4K, but the editor will repeat each frame approx. 4 times and the video will be really jerky.

You are correct that when you slow it down, if you don't have the head room(FPS) to begin with, the editor will add frames, however I have never run into the problem where it gets jerky, OPTICAL FLOW fixes all that automatically, and that might be editor dependent feature? FWIW I use Premier Pro CC.

The reason for the resolution drop, if you shoot in 4K(3840), then slow things down, if you export into 1440 or 1080 for example when it compresses the video, any funkiness/aberrations in the video @4K seems to magically disappear/become invisible in the resolution drop.

I am certainly not a slow motion expert, fool around with it enough to feel semi comfortable doing it, but certainly no master. However with my own trail and error, have come to the conclusion for ME that its not worth the hassle of switching all my camera setting to shoot something in HFR, then switch everything back to do regular filming, its simpler to just do the effect in post. Obviously if you were specifically setting out to do something in slow motion that is a different story, mainly just talking about everyday type stuff.

What's the best camera for travel? Good travel cameras should be small, versatile, and offer good image quality. In this buying guide we've rounded-up several great cameras for travel and recommended the best.

Above $2500 cameras tend to become increasingly specialized, making it difficult to select a 'best' option. We case our eye over the options costing more than $2500 but less than $4000, to find the best all-rounder.

One concept that I am confused about though is filming in 60fps and dropping it into a 24fps timeline. I understand the footage may not be a true 24p because it was filmed at 60p and the shutter is usually double the frame rate (1/120) for the most natural look. But would doing so make the slow-mo smoother compared to using 24fps footage on a 24 fps timeline?

Generally, do shoot in higher fps for slow down in post, if possible. When you slow down a 60p video to 24p, you are getting a clean 2.5x slow-down with no interpolation of frames whatsoever. You will always get the cleanest look when slowing down frame for frame without interpolation, that is interpreting higher fps footage as lower fps. This is the normal way to do slow motion.

Sometimes (rarely) you may want to shoot normal speeds and slow down in post. This is done for artistic purposes. In this case it is best to use a whole number for a slow down multiplier: for example, slow down the 24 fps clip to 12 fps so that each frame is cleanly repeated twice in the final video. This will net you a 2x slow down, nominally the same as shooting 48 fps and interpreting it as if it is 24 fps. But the look will be different and more "dreamlike". e24fc04721
