Common sexual problems in married life (Couple):

As we know sexual problems can affect any stage of a person's sexual response cycle such as desire, arousal, orgasm and resolution and can manifest in different ways in their lives. Following is some of the common issues in the sexual life of couples:

Low libido (decreased sexual desire): Generally, this can affect both men and women. In this condition, the person does not have the desire, thoughts, orientation and expression towards sexual activity and performance. Due to this lack of sexual desire, men and women struggle with their sexual life along with other problems.
Sexual arousal disorder: This sexual problem refers to difficulty in getting or maintaining an erection (for example, erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men, difficulty in vaginal lubrication or lack of clitoral arousal in women). In this condition, the person has sexual arousal but has difficulty in engaging in sexual activity and achieving orgasm.
Sexual intercourse disorders: This sexual problem shows the difficulty reaching orgasm, delay in orgasm, or absence of orgasm for either man or woman (anorgasmia). In most of the cases, women more struggle with this sexual problem in their sexual life.
Painful intercourse (dyspareunia): Pain during or after intercourse is known as dyspareunia, which can have many physical or psychological causes. Both men and women can suffer from this sexual problem. In the case of men, they face the condition of painful ejaculation while women face the condition of penetration disorder.
Premature ejaculation: In men, ejaculation happens before they want it to. In this condition, men do not have control over their ejaculation, they do not have the ability to delay their ejaculation to last longer in bed with their partner. In most of the cases, it is seen that women are not able to achieve their orgasm due to this premature ejaculation in men. It is also cause of relationship distress in married people.
Vaginal contraction: Involuntary tightening of the vaginal muscles, making penetration difficult or painful, is known as vaginismus in women. Mainly, psychological, physiological and a combination of both are the factors responsible for this female sexual problem. In this condition, a woman struggles with penetration disorder in her sexual life.
Disparity in sexual desire: This is a really difficult situation for a married couple, where one partner desires sexual activity more or less frequently than the other. Here, sexual counseling and Ayurvedic approach helps them balance the doshas in the body and improve their mental health and well-being.
Unrealistic expectations about sexual activity: These are often influenced by a person's exposure to social media or social myths. This can be a surprising moment for a person in a sexual activity, where it may or may not be tolerable with the other partner in this sexual activity.
Lack of passion or excitement: This can make a man or woman's sexual life feel ordinary or incomplete. Married couples may have difficulty communicating about sexual activity: feeling uncomfortable or unable to talk about sexual needs and desires. Here, both partners need to educate themselves for mutual understanding in this sexual life.

Factors of Sexual Problems:

Our world renowned Ayurvedacharya Dr. Sunil Dubey says that sexual problems in couples can arise due to various factors, the common ones of which are as follows:

Physical or physiological factors (chronic illness and diseases)
mental or psychological factors (stress, anxiety, and depression)
Relationship or distrust factor (communication, emotion, and trust issues)

Let us understand in detail all the factors that cause sexual problems in an individual or a couple.

Physical or Physiological Factor:

Certain medical conditions: Many diseases and medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, neurological disorders, hormonal imbalances (low estrogen or testosterone), chronic pain, etc. are responsible for sexual problems in a person.
Medications: Certain antidepressants, blood pressure medications, antihistamines and other drugs can have adverse effects on sexual health.
Lifestyle factors: Excessive alcohol consumption, drug abuse, smoking, lack of exercise, poor diet and fatigue almost completely reduce the ability to have sexual health.
Menopause: Hormonal changes can cause vaginal dryness and decreased libido in women.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Hormonal shifts and physical changes can affect sexual desire and comfort.

Aging: Natural hormonal changes can affect sexual function in both men and women. It is a natural process that is normal in all individuals.

Mental or Psychological Factor:

• Stress and anxiety: Overwork, financial or other life stresses can affect sexual desire and performance in men or women. It is a difficult condition not only for sexual health but also for entire wellness.

• Depression: It can significantly lower libido and affect sexual functioning in a person. The chronic depression causes lots of other health issues, such as, forgetfulness, insomnia, etc.

• Poor body image and low self-esteem: It can cause anxiety and discomfort during sexual activity. It always decreases the quality of life in a person.

• Sexual trauma in the past: It can have a long-term impact on sexual intimacy in married life. It can put a person in a psychogenic condition if it is ignored for a long time.

• Performance anxiety: Generally, worrying about sexual performance in men can trigger a cycle of avoidance from sexual act.

• Strict upbringing or negative beliefs about sexual activity: These strict environments can lead to feelings of guilt or shame about sexual activity.

Relationship Factor:

• Lack of emotional intimacy or connection in couples: Feeling distance from your partner can reduce your sexual desire. The relationship between the couple should be perfect without any expectations.

• Unresolved conflicts or frequent arguments in couples: These unresolved conflicts can cause tension in couples and make intimacy even more difficult. It is important for the couple not to keep any conflict for a long time, but resolve it by mutual consent.

• Poor communication in couples: Not being able to talk openly about sexual needs, desires and concerns shows lack of communication between couples, which can affect their sexual life. Have proper and loving communication with your partner which beautifies your relationship.

• Lack of trust in couples: Infidelity or other betrayal in any couple can seriously affect their sexual intimacy. This situation makes the person suspicious and the married relationship becomes fragile.

• Different sexual preferences or desires: If couples do not communicate and address this properly, a feeling of dissatisfaction may arise between them. They must understand their feelings and desires for the satisfaction of both.

• Putting others above natural feelings: This may reduce couples' desire and motivation for sexual intimacy because of being fictitious.

How to solve sexual problems in a relationship:

Dr. Sunil Dubey, the best sexologist in Bihar, says that solving sexual problems often requires a multi-faceted approach involving both partners. This is a time for both when no one can interfere in their communication. He said there are some common factors that couples may consider.

Open and honest Communication –

This is the first important step to troubleshooting problems in married life and relationship issues due to sexual problems. Prioritize a safe and non-judgmental space to talk about your feelings, needs, and concerns related to sexual desires or deficiency.

Choose a neutral time and place to talk, making sure it is not right before or after sexual activity.
Express your feelings using “self” statements.
Actively listen to your partner’s perspective without interrupting.
Be clear about what feels good to you and your partner and what doesn’t.

Couples should focus on their intimacy and connection: It is important to ensure that emotional intimacy is nurtured through non-sexual touch, quality time, shared activities, and expressing affection. This external exposure will help them to understand their outer demands.

Managing expectations: Having realistic expectations about sexual activity and understanding that fluctuations in sexual desire and frequency are normal and can ebb and flow. Both partners need to manage their expectations that will help them to improve their emotion each other.

New ways and exploration: Couples need to try new things together such as different types of touch, sexual positions, or erotic activities that do not necessarily lead to intercourse.

Prioritizing pleasure over orgasm: Couples need to focus on the overall erotic experience and mutual pleasure. It will help them to balance physical and psychological wellness.

Addressing underlying issues: Working on any relationship conflicts, stress, anxiety, or depression that may be contributing to sexual problems.

Being patient and understanding: Resolving sexual problems requires time and effort from both partners. Couples need to support each other and be patient throughout this process.

Educate yourself: Gather as much information as you can and educate yourself about sexual activity, common challenges, and healthy sexual communication

Sexual health care professional support:

Medical sexologist doctor: They help rule out any underlying medical conditions and discuss potential medication side effects.
Sexologist and sexual counselor: A sexologist doctor specializing in sexual issues provides a safe place to discuss sensitive topics, helps improve communication, and offers strategies and exercises to address specific problems. They help both individuals and couples deal with their sexual challenges. They also offer natural remedies to solve problems.

Remember that it is common to experience sexual problems in a relationship, and seeking help indicates strength and commitment to the relationship. With open communication, understanding, and sometimes professional guidance, couples can often overcome sexual problems or challenges in their lives and build a more satisfying sexual life together.
