The runner-up brand, shokz with the OpenSwim Pro Open-Ear, offers a superior choice if your ride involves crossing into open water or requires submersion resistance for intense rainstorms.

The SHOKZ OpenRun Pro 2 stands out as the most advanced option for cyclists who refuse to compromise on audio quality. Unlike traditional bone conduction headphones that often struggle with bass, this model integrates dual drivers combining bone conduction tech with air conduction technology. This hybrid approach creates a richer, more immersive soundscape that feels like concert-like audio even while you are pedaling hard against the wind. It transforms a routine commute into an engaging experience where the music drives your pace rather than just sitting in the background.
For the serious rider, the safety features are equally impressive. The open-ear design keeps your ears completely free, allowing you to hear approaching cars, pedestrians, or other cyclists without taking anything off. The device includes a dedicated Smart Mic with AI noise reduction that filters out up to 96.5% of background noise, including wind speeds up to 15 miles per hour. This means your phone calls remain crystal clear even when you are tearing down a highway or navigating busy city streets. You can customize your listening experience further using the Shokz App, which lets you switch between Classic Mode for pure bone conduction or Volume Boost Mode for louder playback in loud environments.
The build quality reflects its focus on performance. A unibody frame made from Nickel-Titanium alloy memory wire ensures the headset stays put, defying slips and shifts even during intense gym sessions or aggressive cornering on a bike. The weight-optimized design makes it feel almost weightless, so you forget you are wearing it after a few minutes. Battery life supports a full day of riding with 12 hours of continuous use, and a quick 60-minute charge gets you back on the road fast. The main trade-off is the price point and the requirement to manage settings via an app for the full feature set, but for those seeking top-tier audio and stability, these are non-negotiable upgrades.
This model breaks the mold by being one of the few bone conduction headphones designed to survive total submersion. While many sport headphones claim to be water-resistant, the OpenSwim Pro Open-Ear boasts an IP68 rating, meaning it can be submerged in water up to two meters deep for two hours without damage. This makes it the ultimate choice for triathletes or cyclists who might encounter heavy downpours or need to transition directly into a swim. The triple-sealed design protects the internal electronics from sweat and rain, ensuring reliability in the harshest weather conditions.
What truly sets this apart is its dual-mode capability. You can stream music via Bluetooth on land, but once you hit the pool, you switch to MP3 mode. With 32GB of built-in storage, it holds up to 8,000 songs, allowing you to leave your phone behind entirely. This is a game-changer for swimmers who don't want to carry their devices or for runners who want to disconnect from their phones for a cleaner, focused workout. The battery lasts for nine hours, providing ample time for long training sessions or multiple laps.
The fit is engineered to be slim and ergonomic, integrating seamlessly with swim caps, goggles, sunglasses, and bike helmets. You won't feel bulkiness or pressure points even after hours of wear. However, there is a significant limitation to keep in mind: Bluetooth does not work underwater. You must manually toggle to MP3 mode before entering the water, or the connection will fail. If you are strictly a cyclist who never plans to swim, this extra complexity might be unnecessary, but for the multi-sport athlete, it is the only logical choice.

The OpenRun Aeropex represents the classic evolution of bone conduction technology, offering a featherweight design that prioritizes comfort above all else. It utilizes 8th generation bone conduction tech to transmit sound through your cheekbone, leaving your eardrums open to the environment. This ensures you stay safe and connected to your surroundings, which is critical when sharing the road with vehicles. The wraparound frame is incredibly light, making it one of the most comfortable options for all-day wear without causing ear fatigue.
Water resistance is handled well with an IP67 rating, making it completely sweatproof and waterproof for running and fitness routines. It includes a moisture detection alert that warns you before charging if any water remains, adding a layer of safety for your device. The eight-hour battery life is sufficient for most daily commutes and workouts, and the quick charge feature provides 1.5 hours of listening time with just a 10-minute plug-in. This makes it ideal for someone who might forget to charge overnight but needs a quick top-up before heading out.
The sound quality is crisp and clear, delivering the signature open-ear experience Shokz is known for. It pairs easily with Android, iOS, and Windows devices, ensuring universal compatibility. The controls are simple physical buttons, which are easier to operate with sweaty hands than touch interfaces. The trade-off here is that it lacks the advanced audio customization and deep bass of the newer Pro 2 model. If you are looking for a no-frills, reliable pair of headphones for general sports and cycling, the Aeropex hits the sweet spot of performance and simplicity.
This version of the OpenRun brings the core benefits of bone conduction to a slightly different package, maintaining the rugged durability needed for intense outdoor activities. Like its sibling, the Aeropex, it features an IP67 waterproof rating, protecting it from sweat and rain during the most grueling workouts. The design focuses on a secure fit that doesn't shift, thanks to the flexible Nickel-Titanium alloy frame that molds comfortably to your head. It is built to withstand the elements, ensuring your music continues playing whether you are hitting the pavement or climbing a steep hill.
The audio experience relies on the same proven technology that transmits sound through the cheekbone, allowing you to hear your music while remaining fully aware of traffic and terrain. Call quality is excellent, with the microphone filtering out background noise to ensure clear conversations. The battery life matches the industry standard at eight hours, supported by a quick charge capability that gives you 1.5 hours of use from a short charging session. It includes a protective case and a sports headband, adding value for those who want to keep their gear organized and dry.
While it shares many similarities with the Aeropex, this bundle emphasizes the practical aspects of ownership, including the inclusion of a headband for added security during vigorous movement. It is a robust choice for cyclists who want a trusted brand and reliable performance without needing the latest bells and whistles. The main consideration is that it offers a very similar experience to the Aeropex, so unless the specific bundle contents appeal to you, the decision may come down to availability or minor aesthetic preferences.
Raycon has entered the market with a compelling option that challenges the established brands with a focus on balance and longevity. These headphones utilize advanced bone conduction technology to deliver clear, balanced sound without the in-ear pressure that causes irritation. The open-ear design is perfect for commuters and athletes who need to stay alert while listening to podcasts or playlists. The ergonomic build ensures they stay secure during movement, whether you are training outdoors, walking through the city, or working out at the gym.
One of the standout features is the exceptional battery life, offering up to 13 hours of continuous playtime. This significantly outlasts many competitors, making it ideal for long days where you cannot afford to stop and recharge. The IP68 rating provides robust protection against rain, sweat, storms, and spills, ensuring your music keeps playing regardless of the weather conditions. The adjustable nature of the earbuds allows you to slide them closer for louder sound or pull them back to increase environmental awareness, giving you granular control over your listening experience.
The trade-off lies in the build materials and brand reputation compared to specialized audio companies. The enclosure uses ABS plastic and silicone, which are durable but may not feel as premium as the metal alloys found in higher-end models. Additionally, the warranty period is shorter, typically lasting one year compared to the two-year coverage seen in some Shokz models. However, for users who prioritize battery endurance and adjustability over brand prestige, these offer incredible value and performance for the price.
Raycon Bone Conduction Headphones
Identical in specifications to the previous entry but offered in a different colorway, this model serves the same purpose with a slight variation in style. The blue finish provides a fresh look for those who prefer a cooler tone over the standard black or purple options. The core functionality remains unchanged, delivering 13 hours of battery life and IP68 water resistance for all-weather reliability. The adjustable bone conduction earbuds allow you to fine-tune the fit and sound intensity, ensuring a personalized experience for every user.
The featherlight frame and ergonomic design make these suitable for extended wear, reducing the risk of discomfort during long rides or shifts. They are designed to move freely with you, ensuring stability without slowing you down. The open-ear design continues to offer the safety benefit of keeping your ears open to your surroundings, which is crucial for urban cycling and outdoor activities. The seamless connectivity with various devices ensures you can switch between platforms without hassle.
Choosing between the two Raycon options comes down to personal preference in color and potentially minor packaging differences. Both represent a strong alternative to the market leaders, focusing on essential features like battery life and water resistance. For a shopper who wants a reliable pair of headphones without paying a premium for a specific brand name, either of these versions delivers consistent performance and value.
The OpenMove is the accessible entry point into the world of bone conduction, offering the core safety and comfort features at a lower tier. It features a lightweight, secure fit with a wraparound titanium frame that keeps the headphones in place during low-impact activities like light jogging or everyday commutes. The open-ear design ensures you stay motivated and connected to your surroundings, preventing the isolation that can happen with traditional in-ear buds. It is a rugged, sweat-resistant design built to handle the demands of regular workouts without breaking the bank.
Battery life is rated at six hours, which is shorter than the flagship models but sufficient for most daily routines. It includes a USB-C cable for convenient charging, though the charge time is longer at two hours compared to the quick-charge capabilities of the Pro series. The sound quality delivers balanced audio with rich bass, ensuring a pleasant listening experience even on a budget. The included sticker pack adds a fun, customizable element, allowing users to personalize their headphones with vibrant colors.
The main trade-off is the reduced battery life and the lack of advanced features like the dual-driver system or extensive app integration found in the Pro models. It also uses a push-button control method rather than touch controls, which some users might find less intuitive. However, for those who want the safety and comfort of bone conduction technology without the high price tag, the OpenMove is a solid, reliable choice for casual exercise and light cycling.
Designed specifically for riders with smaller heads, the OpenRun Mini offers a more compact band that is 0.83 inches shorter than the standard size. This difference translates to a more stable fit for smaller frames, preventing the headphones from sliding down or feeling loose during movement. It retains the 8th generation bone conduction technology, ensuring you get the same clear audio and environmental awareness as the larger models. The IP67 waterproof rating protects it from sweat and rain, making it suitable for intense workouts and wet weather cycling.
Like the standard OpenRun, it offers eight hours of battery life with a quick charge feature that provides 1.5 hours of listening time from a 10-minute charge. The magnetic induction charging cable ensures a secure connection, and the package includes a sports headband for added stability. The build quality remains high with a Nickel-Titanium alloy frame, providing durability and flexibility. The sound quality is outstanding, transmitting vibrations through the cheekbone for a premium audio experience that leaves your eardrums open.
The primary advantage of this model is the tailored fit for smaller heads, which can be a dealbreaker for users who find standard sizes uncomfortable or unstable. If you have tried other bone conduction headphones and struggled with the fit, this mini version is likely the solution. The trade-off is that it is specifically targeted at a niche demographic, so it may be harder to find in retail stores compared to the standard models. For those who need a secure fit due to their head size, however, it is an essential upgrade.
