Main Roles
Joseph
Male, Tenor – The eleventh son of Jacob. Obviously his father's favourite, Joseph early on shows a talent for interpreting dreams and telling the future. This gets him into trouble with his brothers when he predicts his future will include ruling over the other eleven. However, it saves his life when in Egypt he correctly interprets Pharaoh's dreams. In the end he has risen to a great position of power, but he still forgives his brothers and brings his family to Egypt to partake of the bounty he has accumulated there.
Narrator(s)
Male or Female, Tenor or Soprano – Someone with a strong rock singing voice (high best to E full range Mezzo) who is strong on comedy and moves well. The audience’s guides through the story. The narrator(s) tell Joseph’s story with word and song. Can command the stage while directing focus to story elements. Strong singer(s) with great energy.
The Brothers
Male or Female - There are eleven brothers. Must have strong singing voices and ability to dance. The show depends on contrasting characters of various shapes, nationalities and sizes. Selected brothers will feature in certain numbers
“One More Angel in Heaven” To sing Country and Western style.
“Benjamin Calypso” To sing Harry Belafonte style.
“Canaan Days" A strong comedy actor to sing Jacques Brel/Maurice Chevalier style
Pharaoh
Male or Female, Baritone or Mezzo – Egypt’s ruler, considered a god on earth. Searching for the meaning behind his/her dreams.
Portrayed as a world-famous rock star. Full of energy and confidence.
May also be cast as a member of the greater ensemble.
Supporting Roles:
Contain fewer lines and less scenes to be rehearsed. In choosing these roles, you may also be cast in more than one role.
Jacob
Male, Baritone – Aged father of Joseph and his 11 brothers. Strong character actor who can sing and move well.
Will also double as ensemble in some scenes.
Wives
There are eleven wives. Age range late teens to late 20’s. Must be able to follow basic choreography and strong singing voices.
WIll also double as ensemble in some scenes.
Potiphar
Male or Female, Baritone or Mezzo – Rich, self-indulgent, and sophisticated Egyptian capitalist. Makes Joseph the leader of his household. Strong character actor with a powerful speaking voice.
May also be cast as a member of the greater ensemble.
Mrs. Potiphar
Female, Alto – Indulgent and confident in her pursuit of what she wants, which at this time happens to be Joseph.
May also be cast as a member of the greater ensemble.
Butler
Male or Female, Tenor or Mezzo – Pharaoh’s right hand. While in jail, Joseph interprets the Butler’s dreams to a positive outcome.
WIll also double as ensemble.
Baker
Male or Female, Tenor or Mezzo – Head of Pharaoh’s kitchen. While in jail, Joseph interprets the Baker’s dreams to a less-than-positive outcome.
WIll also double as ensemble.
Ensemble
Male and Female, Various Ranges – Actors, singers, and dances serving as Ishmaelites, Egyptians, Canaanites, and other characters within Joseph’s story.
Dance Ensemble
Male and Female – Incorporated in a few songs with just dancing roles. Featured as cows and corn for the Pharaoh's Song.
Childrens Choir
Male or Female - Actors and singers aged 6-12; Paricipation in some of the songs with low levels of staging and dancing. Lower time commitment and great for beginners in theatre.
Adult Choir
Male or Female - Various Ranges aged 12+; Participation in vocal support. No acting or dancing. Signing support vocals behind the scenes.
