Integrating nesting habitat restoration with at-sea individual-based biomonitoring of the endangered seabird Pterodroma cahow endemic to Bermuda
Outreach activities
1) Bringing the story of Bermuda petrel at primary school (Lisbon, Escola).
Introducing the story of the Bermuda petrel together with our conservation project to primary school students in Portugal (in the picture Externato João XXIII school, Lisbon).
2) Using Bemuda petrel sampled data in order to I) teaching high school students how sex birds by means genetic technique and ii) visually assign potential differences in birds foraging trips using WebGIS tool.
Including the Bermuda petrel project in the cE3c program “Ser Cientista” da FCUL. During this project High school students had the opportunity to be scientist for one week and to develop a project with the support of senior researchers. Monica C. Silva affiliated to cE3c FCUL and member of our team led the activity of a group of students who carried out the following project "DNA sex determination for critically endangered pelagic seabirds: implications for the study of their foraging strategies". 19 blood samples of Bermuda petrels were used for this project.
3) Public talk in the Bermuda island.
On February 11th 2019 our team organized a talk in which several speakers were invited to report on different aspects of the conservation of the Bermuda petrel (Speakers: Jeremy Madeiro, Senior Officer DENR Gov. Bermuda; Letizia Campion,i MARE, ISPA-IU; Mónica C. Silva, CE3C FCUL; J-P Rouja, LookBermuda; Charles Eldermire, Cornell Lab.
