Reading Olympics Overview

Hey there, book enthusiasts and future lifelong readers!

Get ready to embark on a reading adventure like no other! Since way back in 1993, the Berks County Reading Olympics has been igniting the love for books among students in Berks County.

The goal of this awesome event is simple: to spark a passion for reading in kids and have a blast while doing it! We want students to read more, explore a wide range of books, and dive headfirst into the magic of reading and discussing stories with their pals.

So, here's the scoop: teams of 8 to 15 students join forces to tackle a carefully curated list of 25 books suitable for their age and reading level. During April-May of the school year, the Reading Olympics celebration event comes alive, giving teams a chance to dazzle in three rounds of questioning.

Every student takes home a ribbon, based on how many points their team scored that night. But, the real magic isn't just in the awards—it's in the camaraderie and teamwork. Over 100 volunteers rock it as moderators, scorekeepers, and team leaders, all coming together to make this event a smashing success!

Librarians and teachers guide teams in their own schools! You have flexibility in how you run the show, but we're all on the same page when it comes to one thing: getting kids excited about reading!

The Reading Olympics is all about nurturing a love for books and celebrating the joy of reading, where everyone's invited, superstar readers and newcomers alike! So, parents, teachers, librarians, and students, let's join forces and dive into this "Celebration of Reading" together!

Reading Olympics Timeline

September

Schools should identify a building level coordinator who will be the main point of contact for Reading Olympics and submit registration information. Team leaders should also be identified and should begin organizing student teams.

October

School librarians will receive information and online registration notifications, which they should then share with the relevant school administrators and coaches. Schools will be requested to provide an estimate of the number of teams they intend to send to the evening event and whether they will be utilizing buses to transport students. These details are crucial for us to plan ahead, ensuring we have adequate building capacity and parking arrangements.

Registration opens

December

Official Registration materials are available online. Notification will be sent to all school building coordinators who pre-registered.

Late January

Registration form (submitted online), including team names due to Berks RO Event Coordinators.

Late February/Early March

Room Assignments will be emailed directly to the Building Coordinators.

April/May

Attend Evening Events - Dates/Location TBD
