Shattered Beginnings: A Journey Through Love and Renewal.
In this presentation, I examine how storytelling, media, and tradition influence the way women are taught to perceive themselves. Drawing from my book Unlearning Womanhood: Reflections on How We Were Taught to Be Women, I discuss how narratives, both on screen and in our homes, have influenced our identities, silenced us, and perpetuated the idea of “good nurturing.” Through my work, I aim to inspire dialogue, unlearning, and self-definition among women and men alike.

Benita Ofori is a Ghanaian writer and social commentator whose work explores womanhood, identity, family, gender, and the influence of media on cultural perception. Through essays, story-driven reflections, and social observation, she examines how narratives, both lived and portrayed on screen, shape what women are taught to become. Unlearning Womanhood: Reflections on How We Were Taught to Be Women is her signature work — a deeply personal and cultural re-examination of what it means to define womanhood on one’s own terms.
