Instead, they're part of a large ensemble cast coming together to make a rollicking comedy. The Encyclopedia of Indian Cinema has this to say about Sare Chuattar: A big hit, this effervescent comedy launches Bengali cinema’s most successful star duo ever, Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen. Rajanibabu (Chakraborty) runs the Annapurna Boarding House. Into this raucous all-male world of mainly unemployed tenants arrives the beautiful Romola (Sen) with her parents. The hero Rampriti (Kumar) in the end triumphs over his main rival (Bannerjee) and gets the girl. Dey’s breakthrough film after Basu Parivar (1952) expertly orchestrates a large number of characters while sustaining a fast pace.

This story revolves around the contemporary fights between the bangal and ghoti in 50's West bengal. Just after the partition, refugees were coming from east-Pakistan-they are bangal. The old residents of West bengal are ghatis. Both are bangali but there are some differences in pronounciations, in culture and also in ritiuals. Two families start to stay as neighbours. One of them is ghati family, Harimohan is their only casing ? member. He, his wife, son Chanchal and little girl Rini are his family members. In the opposite house, there are Shibapada his wife, son Naru, elder sister Joshoba, Shibada's brother-in law Nepal and Shibapada's orphan niece Pramila. Chanchal teaches Promila as a private tutor. Hasu and Rini play together happily, but the other male members of both the family often fight. They fight for everything, for football-match, for an iron machine or something like that. An affection between Chanchal and Promila grow up. It is revealed to the female members of both family. They agree to settle their marriage. Joshoda comes to propose Harimohan for his son but just before it, Harimohan comes to know that he has lost his job. He refuses and misbehaves with Joshoda. Harimohan doesn't find another job, and start borrowing money from kabuliwallah and from others. A day comes when he has to return all the money which he can't. They plan to escape. Rini comes to know about it and tells to Nasu. Shibapada and Nepal start arranging the moeny for them, and Shibapada's wife gives the money. Harimohan with his family try to escape, but come to know that Shibapada and Nepal have already returned all the money. Their relationship takes a new twist.

synopsis
Agni Pariksha (alternatively Agni Pareeksha or Agni Parikshya or Agnipariksha, transl. The Test Of Fire) is a 1954 Indian Bengali-language romantic drama film directed by Agradoot and starring Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen. The film was adapted from Asha Purna Devi's novel of the same name. The movie was remade in Hindi in 1967 as Chhoti Si Mulaqat also starring Uttam Kumar. Before that the movie was simultaneously made into a 1959 Telugu - Tamil bilingual titled Mangalya Balam in Telugu and Manjal Mahimai in Tamil. The story revolves around Tapasi, a singer who has been married forcefully as a child to an old village zamindar’s grandson Bulu. Back at home, her parents discover the truth and vow to wipe out every single memory of Tapasi ever being married. Years later, Tapasi has now grown up to be a lovely young lady and is in love with Kiriti. She introduces Kiriti to her mother, who approves of him, and plans to marry them. Things change when Tapasi finds out that she has already been married in her childhood. This creates a conflict in her. Others find out this secret and ostracize Tapasi. How will Tapasi and Kiriti deal with this stigma? Will they triumph in their love?

Uttam is a good natured youngster in a village, with some patch of land and ancestral house. His father had promised that uttam will marry his bosom friend's daughter, radha, who is very poor but a very nice looking and sweet girl. (suchitra).
uttam has distant relatives in the same village , equally poor.
the boy and girl are childhood friends and ofcourse like each other. the girl s father wants to celebrate the marriage at the c earliest.
One of the villagers takes ill and uttam goes in search of a doctor and meets the revolutionary leader..who wants youth like uttam to foreswear conventional life and take up full time social work among the poor people in the villages. Uttam likes the man and promises to foliow the advice.
As the leader is underground, he is unable to explain the real reason for his change of heart .
Radha is shattered but has to marry some other outsider. .rather rich but who passes away.
in the meantime, a sprightly girl, from calcutta arrives in the village as she is related to the family. She likes uttam and admires his character. She falls in love with him and helps him in his revolutionary activities , secretly.
Chabbi biswas is the aristocratic father of that girl and veey fond of her.
uttam has to leave his beloved village, his sweetheart and everything , to escape from the police.
thus ends the film.

Synopsis:::
Shankar was a young lawyer in pursuit of making it big in the professional world. However his world is turned upside down when he comes to know that his father, who knew went missing, was in real spending his lifetime in the jail as he was incorrectly accused of murdering a lady named Hemangini. His mother urges him to reinvestigate into the case and save his father. He goes to Kishnanagar in search of the people and the evidences which would help him to prove his father’s innocence. He meets Rita, an young and charming lady who assists him. They fall in love. Shankar faces a lot of roadblocks while trying to collect clues most of them which were imposed by the actual murderer. However he solves the mystery in the end and his father is thus, released from prison.

English translation included. The Encyclopedia of Indian Cinema has this to say about Sagarika: Classic Sen/Kumar melodrama evoking e.g. Nitin Bose’s love tragedies with Dilip Kumar. Impoverished and orphaned medical student Arun (U. Kumar) falls in love with colleague Sagarika (Sen). Following an act of perfidy by Arun’s cousin Sipra (Sinha), who is also in love with him, Arun loses a scholarship to go to England and has to borrow money on condition that he marry Basanti (Singha) on his return. The suffering Sagarika has to look after the illiterate Basanti, which means writing Basanti’s love- letters to Arun. Arun goes blind after an accident, and on his return Sagarika nurses him back to health, pretending to be Basanti. In the end, the lead couple unite. As in the Kapoor/ Nargis love stories of the same period, this film is famous for the ecstatic, soft-focus close-ups of the lead pair and esp. of Suchitra Sen, which became classic icons in Bengali popular culture, transcending the characters and suggesting a fantasy of romance in which love can, by its own internal strength, develop an independent destiny. The monologues, esp. of Uttam Kumar as a voice on the soundtrack, contribute to the lyrical scene transitions, a style which evolved further with e.g. Ajoy Kar (cf. Saptapadi, 1961), Salil Dutta and Asit Sen generating the finest examples of popular film’s absorption of the Bengali romantic literary tradition. These films, and others such as Saat Pake Bandha (1963), are further enhanced by their contrast to the resurgence of traditional values in 80s Bengali cinema, partly through assimilating the ‘social’ contemporary Jatra, and partly as a means of keeping a distance from the influence of Hindi film. There are much better quality versions of the film available here on YouTube. But I, for one, don't like my black and white films tinted blue. And I, for one, don't like them in a modified aspect ratio ('widescreen', with 25% of the film cropped away (removed, missing, destroyed), rather than the original 'full-screen'). This version has additional film footage as compared to other versions here. But the film is still incomplete as the same encyclopedia quoted above says the film is 152 minutes long. There are obvious breaks in the narrative from time to time. The most glaring omission is a scene where Uttam Kumar loses his scholarship to study abroad. Apparently, Suchitra Sen had reported him to the head of the school, based on false information. It's discussed later on in the film. The other versions of the film here on YouTube are missing the same scene. Maybe it's lost forever. But there are other times, too, where you think to yourself, "Hey, what happened?" Synopsis::
: Shusovan and Anita are husband and wife and they start from their place to visit Digbijoy’s house. Although Shusovan is a loving husband, Anita doubts him of having multiple affairs behind her back. On the journey Anita boards the train however Shusovan misses it. He meets Santana De, a beautiful lady who is the wife of a politician named Brojeshwar De. Having missed the train and the destination being the same, both start their jouney together. They witness several hilarious incidents on the way which includes spending the night at a small hotel where they try their best to hide their identity and relation so that they can rest for a while. Anita, on the other hand, suspects that her husband must have eloped with someone else and informs her parents. Her mother was always against Shusovan and his ways and blames her daughter for choosing such a man as her life partner. Together they start searching for Shusovan and Santana. Alongside Brojeshwar also comes to know that his wife has been spotted with another man. Thus creates a situation of suspicion wherein no one is ready to either hear or believe what exactly happened. After much doubt and debate and discussion, at Digbijoy’s place, infront of everyone, the truth about what happened in the nights is revealed and both the couples get back their love and faith for each other.

The Encyclopedia of Indian Cinema says this about Harano Sur: The amnesiac Aloke (Kumar) is rescued from the asylum by doctor Roma (Sen) who takes him to her father’s (Sanyal) edenic country house. They marry, but a second accident, and a new bout of amnesia, makes him forget her and recall instead his earlier life as a rich businessman in Calcutta. When Roma follows him there, he does not remember her, but he hires her as governess to his niece, causing her considerable anguish. Moinak Biswas characterised the film as a domestic melodrama of ‘a subordinate woman winning over her boss’s heart’, in the genre of English novels such as Richardson’s Pamela (Biswas, ‘The Couple and Their Spaces: Harano Sur as Melodrama’, 1995). Roma keeps trying to stimulate the hero’s memory, using e.g. the refrain of their wedding song (and the film’s musical hit) Tumi je amar, but is unable to reply when Aloke, haunted by her presence, asks ‘Who are you?’. The plot provides a schematic version of the classic Kumar-Sen romance with a medical angle (cf. Sagarika, 1956; Deep Jweley Jai, 1959), many lavishly mounted scenes of windswept expanses, fluttering curtains, incense and mnemonic objects such as a bunch of tube-roses, countered by two abrupt eruptions of realist outdoor locations (when Aloke first recovers his memory, and when Roma follows him into his Calcutta office). The film was adapted from Mervyn LeRoy’s Random Harvest (1942). It also says the film is 162 minutes long, so this version is missing a whole lot. One long missing part - probably a whole reel of film (15 minutes or so) - occurs after Uttam and Suchitra marry and she sings a cut off version of the main song (Tumi Je Amar). They begin their married life but then he's in another accident where he forgets everything that occurred after the first accident and goes home to Kolkota to resume his previous life. We pick it up again when he's about to head home. Another missing part occurs after Suchitra follows him to Kolkota, finds him, and goes to his office. There's a break in the plot - probably another whole reel - and then she's been hired as a nanny and encounters him in the middle of the night. And the Hemant Kumar song is also missing. It's disconcerting but the film is haunting, nonetheless.

indrani is the only daughter of a poor and orthodox and conservative person.He educates his only girl so that she can become financially independent and meet her own wedding expenses, Indrani studies very diligently . Her classmate takes her to her family where everybody is captivated by Indrani. The youth in the joint family is doing his doctorate in Literature and helps Indrani in her studies.
She herself proposes to him and they get married - a civil marriage. The boy's family do not approve.This is disapproved by indrani's father as well as the boys parents as they belong to different castes.
Though the boy is highly qualified, he is unable to get a good job. So he takes tution at very low pay. His elder brothers and their wives ill treat them . Indrani
takes up a job and they leave their parents home.
Indrani as a teacher gets very good name from tbe management and gets quickly promoted . but the boy still is at a low paid work.
the village people respect Indrani more than her husband and it makes her husband jealous and bitter.
He then leaves the house and meets an elderly social worker with high ideals. He joins the team for low income but soon gets vreat recognition in public for his social work.
Indrani gets to know about it and is very happy . Now she searches for him and meets him. Their worlds are different however and Indrani wants her husband to return to town which husband refuses.
there is a fire accident and she observes the great and selfless work done by her husband and finally decides to be a partner to him in social work also.

Good film dealing with the problem of slum dwellers in Calcutta.
Suchitra , daughter of a gentle buildinng contractor, has a grand plan to build a decent apartment complex to provide housing to dwellers in a slum area. Uttam is an architect who designs a good apartment complex to meet this dream. Though both are good and noble, misundestandings develop and are ultimately resolved.
very decent film. All uttam-suchitra films are exceptionally decent though highly romantic. Absolutely no physical stuff. just sentiments.

Chaoa Paoa (transl. Desires and Fulfillment) is a 1959 Indian Bengali-language romantic comedy film with three directors Sachin Mukherjee, Dilip Mukherjee, Tarun Majumdar. It is based on the 1934 Academy Awards winning American film It Happened One Night. The film become huge success.
Manju (Suchitra Sen), chafing under her father's domination and his intention to marry her off to a man she doesn't like, leaves home to seek her fortune. Rajat (Uttam Kumar) is a newspaperman about to be fired unless he comes up with a big story. They meet on a train and soon Rajat, after reading a newspaper ad offering 10,000 rupees for Manju's return, decides to lead her back to her father, reap the reward, and reclaim his job. But Love has other plans.
The Hindi-language film, Chori Chori is also a remake of It Happened One Night. It's found in this channel here:

The Encyclopedia of Indian Film says this about Saptapadi:
Set in WW2, the Jesuit Rev. Krishnendu(Uttam. Kumar) runs a military hospital in Bankura. A wounded woman soldier, Rina Braun (Sen),
arrives and he recognises his former lover, triggering a long flashback showing them as
fellow medical students. She is an exotic Eurasian and the hero wins her while playing
Othello (he was dubbed by Utpal Dutt, renowned for his stage performance of that
role) to her Desdemona in a college performance. His orthodox father (Biswas)
forbids their marriage. The hero converts to Christianity and exiles himself. Rina discovers that she is the illegitimate daughter of a Hindu maid and becomes an alcoholic, eventually
joining the army.
Back in the present, Rina tries
to kill herself when she regains consciousness but the lovers are united in the midst of the war
(Tarashankar’s original story ended tragically).
This Kumar/Sen hit (cf. Sagarika, 1956),
including their characteristic low-angle, soft-focus close-ups and stylised movements,
yielded one of the most popular song picturisations of the decade, the classic motor
bike scene number Ei path jadi na shesh hoi.

In this tender film, Bipasha (Suchitra )is a victim of partition riots in Punjab and is saved by Sikh family and brought to Delhi.
She loses her parents and brothers in the partition riots and becomes an orphan.
She is adopted and educated by Christian missionaries. She does very well in her academics and gets a job as a tribal welfare officer in the area of DAamodar valley corporation in Bihar-Bengal border.
Uttam kumar is an engineer engaged in the Damodar valley project. They get to like each other and plan to get married.
The youth has some property in Allahabad but he gets a letter from his maternal uncles that he is illegitimate son of their sister and so no ,egal claim to the propoerty.
Much more than the loss of property, what irks the boy is the accusation that he is illegitimate son of his mother whom he has never once seen and who is supposed to be dead.
the letter arrives just before his planned wedding, and deeply distraught by the social stigma that Bipasha will suffer of marrying an illegitimate boy, he skips the function and rushes to Allahabad.
But, Bipasha , considers herself as married and goes in search of the boy.
It turns out finally that he is very much a legitimate and only son of his mother who is leading a pious life at Ganges ghat.
Happy ending.

Synopsis::
Reena was a very honest, beautiful and tomboy type village girl who lived with her grandfather in East Bengal. She developed a very close relationship with her simple style of living. But Partition of India creates problems for them. Reena had to came to Kolkata in her maternal uncles home . But here she faced a totally different scenario. The lifestyles were too different. She was not able to adjust properly. In a social gathering a local Entrepreneur Mr. Bagchi observed it but he began to like Reena. After a while they got married together. Then they were blessed with a child . But Reena was not all comfortable with her child’s value system and psychology. So a complication was born between them. This is a story of different perspectives who forced to live life together bonded in a relationship.
Luckily, her husband accepts her value system and we have a happy ending.

Synopsis:::
This story revolves around Nira and Binu. Nira had lost her parents in early childhood. She was brought up by her uncle and aunt. On the day of her marriage she came to know that the person with whom she was getting married already had a wife and a child. She refused to marry but her cousin brothers were coercing her to marry. So, she fled from the house. She was given shelter by Srinath Banerjee, an artist. At Srinath’s house she met Binu (Uttam Kumar) who was also an artist. Binu had an orphanage and he took Nira there with him. Nira took charge of the orphanage and the children loved and respected her. Before Nira’s arrival, there was another lady in the ashram, Protima, who was popularly known as Mamoni. Protima was admitted to a hospital as she was suffering from T.B. Suddenly one day Protima returned to the ashram. When she saw Nira there and the love and care she was getting from each and every member of the ashram, she simply couldn’t tolerate it. She started hating Nira. The main reason for her hatred was Binu’s love for Nira. Mamoni loved Binu and could not tolerate Nira’s presence in his life. One day Protima forced asked Binu to write that he loved her on a piece of paper saying that she would not eat if he did not do so. She showed that paper to Nira and destroyed their relationship. Nira left the ashram. Much later Nira realized that she had misunderstood Binu. She accepted Binu in her life and they lived after happily ever after. By then Protima had died.

Priyo Bandhabi is a 1975 Indian Bengali drama film released on Oct 03, 1975. The film is directed by Hiren Nag.
Jawhar was a vagabond. One day he suddenly met with Sreemati. Sreemati was fled away from his husband Prakash’s house. Prakash was a drunker, loose character. He tortured her wife. Sreemati did not return her father’s house because; she did not want to show her problems to her father. In the mean time she met with Jawhar. They become good friend. They spend some days together and faced many comical situations. Prakash tried to kidnap Sreemati but he failed. Sreemati’s father was a very rich man. He became ill when he heard about Sreemati. After the death of her father, Sreemati returned home. Now she is a rich person. She met again with Jawhar and took him to her house. But Jawhar did not able to adjust with such luxurious situation. He came out without saying anybody. One day they met again. This time Sreemati took his company and left all her wealth for the orphans.
