Also called:
First World War or Great War
Date:
July 28, 1914 - November 11, 1918
The First World War was the first truly global conflict and one of the great watersheds of 20th-century geopolitical history. It led to the fall of four great imperial dynasties (in Germany, Russia, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey). From 1914 to 1918, fighting took place across several continents at sea and for the first time in the air.
The war in the air
Aircraft was a new technology at that time that opened up a whole new theatre of war. Control of the skies had an impact on the war on the ground. Teoups could gather intilligence on enemy positions and direct artillery.
The war at sea
Fierce fighting also took place at sea. Attacks by surface vessels and submarines, alongside of blockades of ports, affected both military personnel and civilians.
