Ben Davidson is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor at Union College. In 2023-24 he served as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Salzburg in Austria, and as a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow at the American Antiquarian Society. His current book manuscript, Freedom’s Generation: Coming of Age in the Era of Emancipation, traces the lives of Black and white children from across the nation who grew up during the Civil War. Research from this project has been published in the journal Civil War History. He has also started new research projects on abolition and religious freedom in the Atlantic World and on the Freedman's Savings Bank and reparations.
Davidson has taught courses including Emancipation in US History, Historical Justice, Civil War and Reconstruction, Race, Ethnicity, and Immigration, as well as survey courses in History and the Humanities. He is interested in public history, having held the James Smithson Fellowhip at the National Museum of American History, and currently serves on the board of the Rokeby Museum in Ferrisburgh, Vermont.
