Within the 2024 Aves Compartidas program, I was a member of the 4th-grade team alongside Maggie Combs and Zo Hill Sparks. During the winter, we worked together to enhance and revise five lesson plans and a field trip. During this time, I took on the role of translator, ensuring not only that the content included accurate and thorough translations, but also working to increase the amount of Spanish present in our lessons and materials, improving language accessibility for both my co-leads and our students.
4TH GRADE MATERIALS
Our fourth lesson on migration, called "Un Viaje de Pájaros," or "A Bird's Journey"
INFOGRAPHICS
All five of the fourth-grade spotlight species are primarily insectivorous - eating insects and other arthropods. In 2024, World Migratory Bird Day, a yearly event led by Environment for the Americas and other groups, chose insects as their conservation theme. Insects are a crucial food source for each of our spotlight species during their long migrations, and we wanted to emphasize the importance of these ecological relationships. For each of the five spotlight species, I led the research on our highlighted insect species and then translated each document into a Spanish copy. Through these infographics, students were able to deepen their understanding of the ecological interactions that are crucial to the survival and conservation of migratory birds.
