We would like to congratulate Dr Chiew on his appointment as an Adjunct Senior Fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. This appointment will further extend research collaboration between Monash University Malaysia and University of Canterbury.

The BEMS would like to welcome Dr Issac Lim as a member of the group. Dr Issac Lim specializes in product design innovation. He graduated from Monash University Malaysia with a Bachelor of Engineering and a Doctor in Philosophy degree majoring in mechanical engineering. Issac brings to the group him more than 10 years of industry experience. He is a certified TRIZ consultant and trainer. To date, he has consulted and trained innovators from diverse industries within South East Asia. His involvement in the startup ecosystem has resulted in the establishment of an incubator and startups. These experiences will be valuable to the BEMS group.
2. Members of the BEMS group, Assoc Prof Ooi Ean Hin & Dr Chiew Yeong Shiong, together with other academics from School of Engineering (SoE) and School of Medicine (SoM) visited the Clinical School Johor Bahru and the South East Asia Community Observatory (SEACO) in Segamat as part of the inaugural Medicine Engineering Research Collaboration Initiative in Monash (MERCI-Monash). MERCI-Monash is initiated by Assoc Prof Ooi Ean Hin from SoE, and Assoc Prof Kumaran Narayanan and Prof Letchuman Ramanathan from SoM. MERCI-Monash aims to identify and utilise the resources and expertise of academics from SoE and SoM to explore the nexus between medicine and engineering in developing innovative solutions to healthcare challenges.

We wish to congratulate Dr Knopp from the University of Canterbury, for her publication in the IFAC Journal of Systems and Control on "Ubiquity of models describing inspiratory effort dynamics in patients on pressure support ventilation". This work is a collaboration between universities and hospitals in New Zealand, Malaysia, and Greece. We would also like to thank Prof Dimitrios Georgopoulos from the University of Crete. He is a leading expert in the field of mechanical ventilation and breathing synchronisation. He has shared unique data on mechanically ventilated patients with oesophageal pressure measurements, which are rare in Malaysia or New Zealand.

Our PhD student, Christopher Ang has jetted off to the University of Canterbury, New Zealand under the Monash University Malaysia PhD Mobility Program. He will continue his research with Distinguished Professor, Dr J. Geoffrey Chase. We wish him the best and a fruitful attachment program there.
Assoc Prof Dr Ooi has recently been appointed into the editorial board of the journal Mathematics in Medical and Life Sciences and the Journal of Medical Engineering and Technology. MMLS focuses on Mathematical Sciences, broadly defined, including statistics, computational biology and computational engineering, while JMET provide a broad perspective on engineering and technology in the medical setting.

Our paper authored by PhD candidate, Alexis Mak on "Enlarging the thermal coagulation volume during thermochemical ablation with alternating acid-base injection by shortening the injection interval: a computational study" has been accepted for publication in the journal Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine.
4. The BEMS group is happy to announce that Alexis Mak has successfully completed her PhD on "Computational modelling of thermochemical process during thermochemical ablation of biological tissues". In her PhD, Alexis developed a computational framework to simulate four main processes that occur during thermochemical ablation. Congratulations Dr Alexis Mak and all the best in your future endeavour.

Christopher Ang work's on "Virtual patient with temporal evolution for mechanical ventilation trial studies: A stochastic model approach" has been accepted in the journal Computer Methods in Programs and Biomedicine. The work provides insight into the importance of temporal evolution of a patient condition and how this can be accounted for via a stochastic modelling approach. Congrats to Chris and the team on their success.

We would like to congratulate our PhD student, Christopher Ang for his paper "Stochasticity of the Respiratory Mechanics during Mechanical Ventilation Treatment" being accepted in the journal, Results in Engineering. The work has provided a guide in adjusting a stochastic model for better predictions.
We are pleased announce the publication of the book "Cyber-Physical-Human Systems: Fundamentals and Applications edited by Annaswamy et al. by Wiley-IEEE Press. Dr Chiew has assisted in the chapter "Digital Twins and Automation of Care in the Intensive Care Unit". This chapter shared the light in the application of digital twins in hospital intensive care.

Huge congratulations to PhD student William Lim for the acceptance of his paper in the journal Ultrasonics. His paper on "The role of shear viscosity as a biomarker for improving chronic kidney disease detection using shear wave elastography: a computational study using a validated finite element model" demonstrates how tissue viscosity can potentially be used as a biomarker during SWE for chronic kidney detection. This was shown to be an improvement over using tissue elasticity alone when the viscous component of the tissue is significant.

The BEMS group welcomes PhD student Mr Mok Hou Yin (Jacob), who will carry out research work on the development of human skin digital twin for in silico dynamic thermography. Jacob is funded under the Digital Health Scholarship and is supervised by Dr Ooi Ean Hin, Dr Chiew Yeong Shiong and Dr Narendra Pamidi from the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Our paper "An in silico assessment on the potential of using saline infusion to overcome non-confluent coagulation zone during two-probe, no-touch bipolar radiofrequency ablation of liver cancer" authored by former undergraduate student Yip Wai Pong has been accepted for publication in the journal Medical Engineering & Physics.
We would like to congratulate Dr Chiew Yeong Shiong on his recent appointment as one of the editorial board members in the PLoS ONE journal. PLoS ONE is a multi-disciplinary journal with an impact factor of 3.752 in JCR. We wish Dr Chiew all the best in his appointment.

Our paper on "The effects of electrical and thermal boundary condition on the simulation of radiofrequency ablation of liver cancer for tumours located near to the liver boundary " has been accepted for publication in the journal Computers in Biology and Medicine.

Successfully secured MYR 25,000 from Sunway Medical Centre to carry out research on pneumocephalus and its impact on stress-strain distribution inside the brain.
