Please ensure you purchase medical and accident insurance in your home country before departing for Taiwan. This is crucial for covering any medical needs during your initial stay. Under Taiwanese law, international students are only eligible to enroll in Taiwan's National Health Insurance (NHI) after continuously residing in Taiwan for six months.
For international participants in various programs (TRI, IIPP, TEEP, TVRC), a visa is required to enter Taiwan if their home country is not eligible for the visa-exemption program (participants of the virtual TVRC program do not need to be physically present and are exempt from visa requirements). To apply for a visitor visa, applicants should consult the nearest Taiwanese embassy or representative office. Generally, they will need to prepare a valid passport, official approval issued by a Taiwanese government agency (such as the NSTC or MOE), and other required country-specific documents.
Regarding the duration of stay, if the initial visa does not cover the entire internship period, TRI and TEEP participants may apply for an extension at a National Immigration Agency (NIA) Service Center up to 15 days before their permitted stay expires, provided the total duration does not exceed six months; they must also request an enrollment letter from their program coordinator at least two weeks before visiting the NIA. On the other hand, IIPP participants are typically granted non-extendable 90-day visas, as the program is designed for that timeframe. If their visa expires before the internship end date, they should contact the IIPP office directly to discuss adjusting the internship duration.
