Dear Colleagues,
We hope this message finds all of you safe and in good health. TESOL has now been swept up in the whirlwind of recent changes, suspensions, and interruptions, as you have seen in the various announcements that have been sent out. We join the rest of the TESOL community in our expression of loss and regret.
We have decided to hold a virtual BELPaF Symposium, so please think about reviving that presentation that you had hoped to give in Denver or at a previous TESOL convention.
Please let us know if you would like to present at the Symposium by contacting belpaf2019@gmail.com before 9 pm on Wednesday, April 8, 2020.
The 2020 BELPaF Symposium will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2020 on ZOOM beginning at 1 pm. So please save the date!! Please look for the link in My TESOL on the BELPaF PLN community site.
We would like to thank the BELPaF membership for its support over the years, as well as TESOL leadership and management for its many forms of support at this year's convention. We are especially grateful to Dr. Shondel Nero for the keynote address she has generously agreed to present at our symposium and to Mary Romney who has been a constant guide in all that BELPaF does.
In addition, we are very grateful to those of you who attended our BELPaF Annual Networking and Business Meeting, held Saturday, March 4 at 3:00 pm. We also appreciate TESOL President Deborah Short's attendance and valuable input.
We certainly hope to resume and reconnect at TESOL 2021 in Houston. In the meantime, please continue to participate in BELPAF's efforts to move the convention and the association toward greater inclusion of people of African descent.
Best wishes,
Lavette Coney

From Exception to Norm:
Engaging Black Voices in the ESOL Classroom
There's been a long history of underrepresentation of Black bodies and voices in the field of education, and TESOL in particular. This talk confronts the vicious cycle of Blacks (students and teachers) being framed as the exception and having to be exceptional while confronting systematic exclusion in English language teaching and learning. Taking a proactive approach, I discuss the challenges and possibilities for increasing Black representation in TESOL as well as strategies for engaging Black language, literature, and research in ESOL classrooms so that the Black presence in TESOL becomes more normalized.
